Book Update, The Art of Packing and A Holiday by the Sea

I am extremely happy to report that I have finished the rough draft of my very first novel! For the past three months I have been working feverishly, yet happily. Now that I am faced with the rewrite, however, I feel that the real work is about to begin! *sigh*

But before I jump in, I am celebrating this minor accomplishment by going on a three week vacation to Portugal and England. I have never been to Portugal and am very much looking forward to a holiday by the sea...

This upcoming vacation is yet another opportunity for me to try and pack stylishly and efficiently... With my England trip last October I was highly dismayed to have packed way too much- I must have used only 50% of what I brought- which has made me a firm believer that lugging around excess baggage is never a good look.

So this time around I am going to try an experiment. For the entire three weeks I plan on only bringing minimal clothing- 2 cashmere sweaters, 2 pairs of jeans, 4 tops, 4 dresses, 1 bathing suit, 2 pairs of ballet flats, one pair of flip flops (for the beach), and a pair of heels.

I will either feel incredibly liberated with the lack of excess baggage, or I will curse the heavens that I didn't pack enough! Only time will tell...

I would love to know, how do you pack for a trip?

I'm trying really hard to understand scheduling a post on blogger.

I failed with my purple day post (it came out prematurely) so I'm re-trying at the risk of spamming my twitterfeed with this one.

Feast your eyes on these little beauties while I try out another scheduled post.

March 26th is Purple Day!

On March 26th the Canadian Epilepsy Alliance is launching their second annual Purple Day to raise awareness of epilepsy in support of children, their families and adults affected by the disorder. With the cooperation from epilepsy organizations around the world, it has become a global initiative.

The Story behind Purple Day
Purple Day was started by Cassidy Megan, a nine year old girl from Nova Scotia who decided to inform the general public about epilepsy and increase awareness of the condition. Worldwide, 50 million people have epilepsy and in Canada approximately 1% of the population is affected. It tends to be more common in the very young or the elderly, but it can occur at any age.

Why purple?
Lavender is the international colour associated with epilepsy

What Is Epilepsy?
Epilepsy is actually a group of syndromes, all characterized by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. The result of this abnormal activity is commonly a seizure of which there are numerous different manifestations.

Not always what it seems!
Not all disabilities are visible and the reminder to wear purple to highlight Epilepsy Awareness is a good example. Surely I’m not the only person who winces when I hear an overeaction by a child or an adult as, ".... and then she just threw a fit!"?

You cannot tell that someone has epilepsy just by looking at them; they're not taller, shorter, clumsier or walk with a stick. This means that many people with epilepsy can quietly go about their everyday life leaving those who they meet none the wiser about their condition. And many choose to do this since epilepsy still carries quite a stigma in society.

There is a lot of misinformation, ranging from incorrect first aid advice (please do read the First Aid tips linked below - it will help both you and your patient avoid injury) thru full blown prejudice about mental impairment to active discrimination in employment, the legal system, parenting and education.

With appropriate medication epilepsy is not a barrier to daily life, for children or adults. Certainly some adjustments do have to be made; swimming or bathing alone can be a definite no-no for example, and certain sports are generally not advised.

But sometimes you can spot epilepsy. A dreamy child might be going thru a petit mal seizure so inattention in class is involuntary, not willful. An apparently intoxicated co-worker might be struggling with a new anti-seizure regime. Resisting physical confinement may not be aggressive; it could be the manifestation of a certain type of seizure and so on.

Approximately 1% of the population has epilepsy so it's possible you have already witnessed a seizure but not known it.... so please read the information in the links and wear your purple with pride

...... or maybe even just choose a different figure of speech to describe someone’s behaviour on March 26th.

How To Choose And Apply A Bronzer

As summer approaches and we get outside more, Bronzer sales are ever increasing. We start to get a bit of color to our skin, ever so slightly sunkissed as we garden, ride our bikes, take walks or perform whatever favorite outdoor activity we may be into. Using a Bronzer allows us to keep our faces protected, yet provides a beautiful tan in order to match the rest of our bodies as our melanin gradually deepens from careful sun exposure.

Bronzer allows us to create subtle shifts in shading as our skin begins to darken. It also is used for contouring our faces. Bronzer is a very versatile product since it can be quite sheer. Yet with so many on the market it is difficult to know how to choose a Bronzer or even how to apply one once you get it.

There are several types of Mineral Bronzing Powder available: Outside of a variety of color choices these are the basic formulations on the market today in loose powder form.

      1. Sparkle Bronzer ~ Usually is an all colored mica based bronzer with only Titanium Dioxide added to the blend.

      2. Shimmer Bronzer ~ This Bronzer is formulated with colored mica blended in a base of mineral and / or botanical ingredients including iron oxides.

      3. Plain Bronzer ~ Typically a Bronzer that is formulated in the same way a matte blush is. A simple base of minerals, Sericite (mica) and Iron Oxides.
You may be wondering what is the significance of this?

Each Bronzer will perform in different ways on the skin.

For instance the first one will offer a sunkiss glow of color and is great for literally adding sparkle to the skin and face. Makes for a lovely evening highlighter that lends elegance to that enchanted evening. But for those that don't care for the sparkle effect then this would not be the one to choose.

The second choice is how we formulate ours and is the most popular among Bronzer selections. This Bronzer has a subtle shimmer effect, is quite sheer and boosts the skin shading to the perfect depth of color. Your skin will have a lovely luminous glow about it without looking sparkly.

The third choice, is strictly for deepening the skin tone as we tan, is great for contouring the face, is typically matte, and women use this type of Bronzer when wishing to only contour their face. For women that wish to deepen their entire complexion will find this type of Bronzer difficult to work with.

Now for the downside to certain Bronzers:

The first one is self explanatory. Many women will feel as though they are wearing glitter on their skin, and some love this effect while others don't want to look like they just stepped out of a New Years Eve Party.

The second one gives subtle shimmer, and is the best compromise for achieving the healthy glow of sunkissed skin. Even so, some women may be concerned about using one with just a hint of shimmer. The good news is this formula of Bronzer with a shimmer effect can be diminished as I will explain in a bit.

The third choice, though it has no shimmer effect can produce a flat, muddy appearance to the skin. This type of Bronzer can rarely be applied sheer enough and can go on heavy in color and make the face lose dimension. This is a poor choice for achieving sheer perfection.

Understanding The Performance Of Bronzers:

Bronzers are not designed for coverage of facial imperfections but to refract light to diminish their appearance. When formulated correctly they are excellent for boosting skin tone as we darken from the sun. They can be mixed with your foundation for deepening its' tone or applied last thing over your foundation and mineral veil.

Tip: For best results always apply last thing rather than blend with foundation. Use a darker shade of foundation if you want to darken your skin rather than with a use of a bronzer in this way.

Bronzers are also formulated to recreate the natural appearance of being out in the sun. Typically as we darken, our skin gets a healthy glow about it and doesn't go flat or look splotchy. Skin tone tends to even as we gain a tan. That is why women with a tan can hide spider veins, and redness on the skin seems to disappear behind the ever deepening healthy looking veil.

This is why the second type of Bronzer works so well. It gives a beautiful subtle, deepening glow of naturally tanned skin due to the slight shimmer effect it offers. Without the use of colored mica, the skin loses the 3 dimensional effect. A shimmer Bronzer gives our faces depth and natural contour.

The third type of Bronzer because of how it is formulated may add color and will darken the skin, but the complaint by the women who use this type of matte Bronzer claim it makes their skin look splotchy, muddy and flat looking. Not a very pretty picture.

The reason this occurs is due to the heavy formulation of base with Iron Oxides. You can achieve coverage with this type of Bronzer, so it is more like a foundation rather than an actual Bronzer. Hence the problems you get when trying to work with this type as an individual layer to your makeup.

Bronzer should float across the skin in sheer form, so the coverage must be sheer like a mineral veil with just a hint of iron oxide to shade them correctly.

How To Apply Bronzer:

When using a quality Bronzer, you can apply it alone or over your makeup. When used alone, remember it will not provide any coverage but will deepen your skin tone allowing "you" to shine through. Also, be aware, when used alone, make sure your skin is dry and moisturizer is completely absorbed, otherwise, Bronzer will stick to moist areas and not readily disperse.

Applied last thing over your makeup is ideal since this will provide the most depth to your facial features, give a natural healthy glow and make for a gradual deepening of skin tone. Very easy to control the shade you wish when applied this way. Bronzer also is designed to sit on top of the skin and / or your foundation leaving skin lustrous with the effect of a slight shimmer I described earlier.

Always use a large fluffy, open bristled brush for Bronzer. This will allow the bristles to flare and prevent too much powder from going in one spot on the skin. Brushes used for mineral foundation are too dense and will make for a less than favorable result.

When dipping your brush into the Bronzer, make sure you always tap off excess or tap bottom of handle and sift powder in amongst the bristles. You should only see a smattering of powder tipping the bristles as demonstrated in the picture to the right. Sweep quickly with light strokes, barely touching the skins' surface with the bristles. Dip and reapply in layers only to keep shading and contouring even.

Continue to work in broad sweeping strokes as the powder gets placed where you want it. Always apply in layers and allow to warm to your skins' natural oils to see how dark you get before adding more. Using a light spritz of distilled water will hasten this effect. Don't forget to go down onto the neck and Décolleté area. Applying to your shoulders also for a subtle touch of color.

Want To Reduce Shimmer?

Many women love the sheer application of a Bronzer but wish to reduce the shimmer effect that accompanies this popular formula, realizing the latter choice will make their skin uneven and muddy and the first choice is too much glitter for their taste.

It is very simple! It is similar to foiling eye color.

Many women aren't aware of this, but when you spritz the skin with moisture after applying Bronzer, it not only deepens the shade quickly, but it minimizes the shimmer effect.

Once your face dries, go over the face again with your foundation brush to meld the Bronzer with your foundation. Or if needing it a bit darker, add another layer and repeat the steps again to reduce the shimmer effect.

This is the same way you foil an eye color with a moist brush. It intensifies the shade, yet any shimmer is greatly reduced.

The healthy sheer, deepened glow is all that remains! Beautiful!

Wishing you continued skin health....and be careful out in the sunshine.

new balls please

a little tribe of flotsam beads

Spring must be around the corner. I suspect this not because the sun is peeking out from behind the many clouds but my studio got an impromptu clear out last week after I ranted at how messy my desk was.
So this morning (my child-free morning!) I'm starting things off with freshly brewed coffee, some new fuzzy balls to play with (not mr ebb btw, who is the only 'cloud' in my day since he's working from home!) and a blog post about how efficient I'm going to be today (ho hum - catch me on Twitter to see how I'm doing thru out the day).
First off is this blog post (ta da!) and then I'm going to pair the fuzzy balls with some beautiful fluorite beads and silver spacers to make another choker (I really like this length though I will lengthen on request!).
After that I have piles ofr admin to do.
Sometimes it's just not possible to portably craft 24/7 as the desk time catches up.
... and today is one of those days! le sigh

mixed (up) media coming soon ......

peas r green flotsam wire and fibre choker

peas r green flotsam wire and fibre choker-length necklace

In a burst of spring efficiency I have cleaned my desk and tidied my studio (but not too much). Spring Break is over so my blissful 2 and a bit hours of child-free-ness has resumed.

In translation I can now play catch up so excuse me if I'm not blogging v much - there are a million and one things with deadlines which I need to elminate.

... but I did get this choker finished, photographed and photoshopped to be ready for listing. Now I just need to list it ..... not sure where yet.

Oh, and I might get round to making some of the fuzzy balls as beading supplies .... when I get used to having some time to myself again!

PS: there are some naked balls here!

Is It Spring Yet?

By jiminy - yes (if today's sun is any indication).

Is It Spring Yet? completedAround this time of year I get so sick of winter that I start yearning for spring and the little green shoots. A couple of years ago this yearning was so extreme that it spilled over into my crafting. I made a long necklace which incorporated three tiny green (amazonite I think) beads among so many white ones.

This year I have another long necklace featuring some wire beads ready to be photographed and listed (ah for some time!). I've also made a few fine silver IISY cuffs, there's one on icraft, with tiny green beads nestled among the silver mesh and white beads.

Must make some more - they would be great mother's day gifts!

the cluttered chaos of zero personal time

no idea where anything is these daysI'm not that great with spring break. My desk has become a sort of dumping ground. I really hate the way that being short of personal time robs me of any sort of routine or plan or efficiency. When I have no idea how long an amusement might keep The Wee Guy occupied I find it very difficult to settle into any kind of project - I hate being torn away from something when I'm fully into the moment of it, indeed I have even been known to bite heads off at the slightest interruption.

What I should have done is pre-empted the time scarcity of Spring Break and organised a few projects to make the most of varying lengths of time. I have in fact had a whopping 2 hours each afternoon while clay class was in full swing, but since all I could do was sit internetting in Starbucks I must admit that I squandered the time somewhat. I did get some www searches sorted (my Renaissance Wax should arrive soon and I've found a number of piano books on ebay!) and sourced a cheaper supply of contact lenses, but otherwise my crafty fingers are twitching. I hate not being productive. For me, life is too short to be unproductive. I have a craft fair coming up, my sister arrives at easter and a new supply of fuzzy balls need to be strung. bead soup - forget me notIf I had been wise, I could have made some more wire beads in spare 10 minute slots or finished a few more rows of crochet on a ribbon scarf. I could have sorted a bead soup or strung them on wire for some new cuffs in 20 minutes and with a luxurious 30 minutes finished some trickier bits of shaping on a knit pattern.fine silver balls

.... but I didn't because at the back of my mind the tax deadline for online filing is looming and my desk is too messy to work at! Although i am a firm believer in a clean desk representing an empty mind i think the current state of chaos is taking it just too far.

..... must instill some order into the chaos and increase productivity!(wish me luck)

Is This Really Mineral Makeup?

I had a customer send me an interesting ingredient list for a mineral makeup company, which shall remain nameless, only offering it in liquid form. She wanted to know if this was considered a mineral makeup and would it be safe to use since she had dry, yet acne prone skin and using powders, she thought would be too drying? With this question asked, I decided to share with my readers my findings.

I took a look at the company's profile and what they offered, and their foundations came in 3 formulas and all of their other products are in liquid form as well....blush, eye shadows, etc.

Now there are other mineral makeup companies that also will provide a liquid version and for the most part they are kept basic and use botanicals and essential oils for creating the liquid form. Nothing harmful or weird, and they keep it as natural as they can. However for safety reasons, most will have to use preservatives to prevent bacterial, fungal, and mold growth once moisture is added to the formula. It is usually in the form of parabens or a preservative blend and isn't always disclosed on the ingredient list.

Below is the list of ingredients of this company in question and it comes in a very limited color choice of only 4 shades. Needless to say this list of ingredients is nothing short of pure chemicals, and should be approached with caution.

Active Ingredients: Zinc Oxide-7% & Titanium Dioxide-2.4%
Ingredients: C11-13 Isoparaffin, Iron Oxides, Decamethyl Cyclopentasiloxane, Cyclomethicone, Deionized Water, Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate, Lauryl Methacrylate/Glycol Dimethacrylate Crosspolymer, Ethylene/Propylene/Styrene Copolymer, Butylene/Ethylene/Styrene Copolymer, Styrene/Acrylates Copolymer, Glycerin, Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone, Panthenol, Phenoxyethanol, Dimethicone Copolymer, Cetyl Dimethicone, Hydrated Silica, PEG/Ppg-20/15 Dimethicone, Alumina, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Magnesium Sulfate, Methylparaben, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, Propylparaben

Now when I took a look at this list of ingredients, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. In reviewing this product, I can only tell anyone curious, this is not mineral makeup and is basically a liquid sunscreen with color using the Active ingredients of titanium and zinc. You can basically get the same thing in Revlon Colorstay, but with a synthetic chemical sunscreen offered and some pretty fancy and more synthetic ingredients to compliment this list above.

The first ingredient is a purified petroleum distillate which is described as an ingredient used as a solvent which can cause temporary dryness with excessive contact to the skin in the MSDS (material safety data sheet). I would say everyday use would be pretty excessive.

Second ingredient iron oxides are your natural colorants.

The third ingredient is a siloxane fluid that is used in personal care products for a luxurious feel and is used in dry cleaning for suspension of dirt and oils from garments.

The fourth and fifth ingredient are pretty self explanatory, just water and silicone oil.

Sixth ingredient we have seen in our deodorants and other cosmetics and is considered a modified food starch, absorber, thickener and anti caking agent. Skin Deep Data Base give this ingredient a 9 on the safety scale. But again remember, this watchdog group also has an 89% data gap along with this assessment, so take with a grain of salt.

The seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth ingredients are film formers, binders, smoothing agents and also are highly water resistant. Unfortunately due to their properties, this would be like putting plastic or vinyl on your face and the redundancy of these ingredients makes for a product which would allow for very little breathing of your skin. It is essentially sealing the skin and keeping the product from shifting or running down your face. Though considered quite safe for skin care products they are comprised of more than one monomer which when chemically bonded, become polymers creating some suspect portion of these ingredients to not be totally without problems for the skin especially for those with acne. You will find many of these ingredients in conditioners and hairsprays or gels for keeping hair silky and frizz free.

Panthenol is a form of Vitamin B and is a humectant and moisturizer.

Phenoxyethanol is a broad spectrum preservative and why this is in there with all the other preservatives....? Redundancy again.

The redundancy of dimethicone oils are also self explanatory, however when seen with a prefix or and end ingredient within the name it is also another film former creating more blockage of pores. It may also be necessary to use this high ratio to offset the first ingredient used to fight a feeling of dryness.

Hydrated silica is used as a anti-caking agent and moisture absorber, and is considered an abrasive and is widely used in toothpaste and dentistry for cleaning teeth.

Alumina is used in antiperspirants and is an inorganic substance mined from the earth.

The ingredients before all the parabens is just another siloxane ether and is used as an emulsifier for keeping the ingredients blended and preventing separation. And the magnesium sulfate is an epsom salt and is used in laxatives. Not really quite sure why it is in a liquid makeup!

The redundancy of parabens is amazing and quite disconcerting. Although there are no studies with unequivocal proof as to how toxic or dangerous parabens are to our systems, there has been enough concern of late that the FDA provides a statement stating their position in this ongoing debate. And seeing them in such a high proportion, this goes beyond due diligence of protecting this emulsion.

I will be doing a follow up article finally on Parabens...Truth and Research. Keep an eye out for this one.

This company purports how all other mineral makeup companies offering their minerals in powder form are always drying, no matter what. And how their own products are moisturizing to the skin. All I can say is this makeup is far from moisturizing. It is only sealing the skin, preventing moisture loss while also blocking the essential air flow to the skin which is needed to keep it healthy. And it is the feeling of moistness due to all the silicone oils utilized they proclaim to give soft skin. In customer reviews similar results were noted that their skin could not breathe and it felt like a mask on....but there were others that loved it, but it was really for only flawless skin. Results weren't quite as good for those who wished to conceal an imperfection.

Any dryness affliction with some mineral powders it is not a direct result of powders per se, but is a result of using too much titanium dioxide or minimal ingredients with basic formulations of Mica, Iron Oxides and of course your essential minerals, titanium and zinc. There are some formulations that can be quite drying, but there are others that will not cause dryness at all. And you can usually avoid most dryness with the use of a great moisturizer beforehand.

Soothing botanicals offer great skin conditioning benefits and prevent dryness by trapping moisture against the skin preventing trans epidermal moisture loss, while still allowing skin to breathe. Something I have been successful in accomplishing in my mineral makeup foundation formulas. In fact many testimonials have stated our foundations will not make your skin feel dried out. Ratios of individual ingredients is what makes the end result accommodating to all skin types.

The only thing I can say about this product is...if liquid minerals are what you are into then by all means use them, yet know that there are other companies utilizing a more natural approach. Just remember, having zinc or titanium in a liquid product does not make it mineral makeup. Mineral makeup will always be comprised mainly of minerals with the occasional company infusing botanicals in order to provide more healing to the skin. Always remember, fewer ingredients means fewer skin sensitizers keeping it simple and safer to use mineral powders in the long run. What they also forget to let the consumer know is a liquid will be absorbed by the skin, so the synthetic chemicals in this product can also be absorbed.

A company by the name of Miessence seems to offer a decent liquid makeup and one that I referred to this client. And with the use of natural oils, these would actually be a truly moisturizing product, not one that seals the skin shut with plastics and vinyls. Again, not really much in the way of actual minerals are being used, so again a very nice skin moisturizer providing color and only Zinc Oxide for sun protection. And also their color range is very limited. But far better and safer than what is listed above. Again, liquids are absorbed, so as far as staying power for lasting coverage this is debatable. Reviews on this product are mixed. Some love it and some, though they thought it felt good on the skin, stated it didn't cover their acne and wore off by end of the day.

However, you can absolutely get a similar effect by moisturizing with an all organic line of skincare, followed up with staying power of mineral powders.

Me personally, I would want to put on my face what I know works and won't harm my skin in the form of great skincare. And then add a diverse healing mineral powder to my skin of optimum coverage with a minimalistic ingredient list keeping my skin free from junk and irritating chemicals. Also to offer me maximum sun protection through layering of the powders. You try to do this with liquid and it will and can appear caked and heavy....mask like. And no matter how hard these companies try, liquid mineral makeup will still run when it gets wet or you perspire.

The other thing that bothered me about this company that is connected with the ingredient list above, and their claims as to how great and healthy it is for skin is in researching their lip colors, they are also using FD&C Lakes for the individual shades. And the synthetic chemical profiles on their blushes and eye colors is profound.

Even though there are many companies out there offering great products and diversity is great for the consumer providing them choices... any company would be better served by sticking with the facts and promoting their products on their merits rather than discrediting an entire portion of the makeup industry with claims and innuendo that simply are not true in certain instances. Not all mineral makeup companies are created equal and I am sure that the founder of this line of cosmetics has not tried every powder formulation on the market to make her argument.

Just like Miessence vs this other company. Both liquid, but does this make all liquid makeup bad for the skin...Or are all liquid makeups created equal? Not at all, and in my opinion one is harmful to skin, and the other is far healthier and gentler to skin and one I would choose if I were wanting a liquid makeup. That is why choice is essential also...even my company will not and cannot be all things to all people as hard as I may strive to be.....but I'll always do my best to meet my customers' needs.

So with all of this clearly stated...Is this really mineral makeup?

No...but a liquid makeup with sunscreen provided by Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide and for the customer that posed the question...Although potentially not drying, her acne would more than likely get worse due to the ingredient profile.

Remember the rule of thumb....you can call something anything you want, just like those that claim they have an all natural organic skincare, yet you read the ingredient list and out of 20 or more ingredients, there are only a few botanicals with the rest being synthetic chemicals....this does not an organic skincare make.

In closing..... the same is true with liquid makeup. Putting a couple of minerals in it with everything else synthetic or organic within the product does not a mineral makeup make.

Stay healthy, be wise and always read your ingredient lists and not go strictly by proclamations and fancy titles.

Wishing everyone continued skin health.

streamlining life ...

As with most mums or stay-at-home parents who aren't quite in the same "league" as the alleged Etsy QYDJ featured sellers (tho' am not sure how most of us manage to miss that set of criteria since none of the SAHMs featured have actually quit their day jobs)(oh yes - don't get muted for a start I guess!) running an at-home craft business involves a lot of time-juggling and parental balancing acts.
It is truly a work of art in itself.
For example, I'm clicking away on the old keyboard at my local Starbucks with my mega-mug of coffee and their wi-fi hotspot while my son attends a Spring Break clay class at the nearby Art Centre. He needs entertainment - I need to get on with marketing (which is what I'm doing right now - go buy my stuff!), photoshopping new business cards and making new inventory for an upcoming craft fair. Unless I fit all this necessary admin in and around my daily life I either end up with nothing or it all happens in the wee small hours of racoonmumhood.
I feel pretty smug about my portable crafting abilities now after a few years of practice but the marketing, admin, etc stuff is still lagging. I'm kidding myself somewhat into thinking that it will all take off once full time school (ah that holy grail!) happens in September. In reality I need to get a grip pretty darn soon.
So far I blog and do a bit of social networking. My Google Analytics and other tracking shows that my Twitter hits are effective in getting peeps to my shops. The Got Craft and Portobello West craft fair websites are also vg at sending visitors so hopefully adding the ArtFire Rapid Cart to my homepage will eventually result in some direct sales.
Otherwise, I'm not that fond of Ning, I'm getting used toFacebook (had a lovely chat yesterday afternoon with a couple of old high school friends I haven't seen in over 20 years) but I am falling totally in love with ByHand. I use the blog feature for a bit of shameless promotion. It drove a lot of lookers to a flickr photo I used and certainly seems to have potential for marketing at least the crafty supplies side of business.
But now I'm even more in love with the site. This morning when I filled in my sporadic blog post and hit "send (or whatever)" I was then asked if I wanted to post it to my blogger??
Wwwwwwwhaaaaaaat? Oh yes! No more blogging on three different blogs? I posted a piece on yarn bombing then sent it over to my portable crafting blog for good measure.
ByHand - you've made my life easier. I think I love you.

yarn bombers!

yarn bombers!, originally uploaded by ebbandflo_pomomama.

I saw my first act of yarn bombing this weekend while on retreat on Salt Spring island.
The yarn bombers had colourfully and tastefully transformed a planter outside the local grocery store into spring garden of knitted tulips and gnomes complete with their own verdant patch of grass.
A nearby tree was decorated too and a small notice informed onlookers of the yarn bombers' intention.
Everybody I saw who passed and stopped was smiling at the sight.

... and then the next morning the installation was blanketed in fresh snow with just the tips peeking out.

I'm not sure about the Gulf Islands since I'm not a resident but sometimes winter just drags on and gloomily on in Lower Mainland BC so a cheerful reminder that spring is not far off is a welcome break.

mossy fuzzy balls

mossy fuzzy balls, originally uploaded by ebbandflo_pomomama.

wonder how many hits this photo will get in my flickr stream? tagging anything with fuzzy balls seems to incite curiosity.
anyways - i made some more wire beads using Beazu's new Smart Wire (never again - it's cheap but not that great to handle. i suspect it contains v little copper core which makes it not as good to work with as Artistic Wire). this little batch is fresh out of the felter in all their fuzzy goodness. i have some cute green jade rondelles to pair them with in a choker-length necklace.

...... did i mention that i'll be at Got Craft on May 3rd?

WOOOOOOOT!!!!!!!!

Unconditional Love by Philosophy

This past week I sampled Philosophy's newest fragrance, Unconditional Love. I've actually tried it three times in the last week as Philosophy has opened a flagship store near my home in Santa Monica and I find myself frequently walking by its open doors.

I will admit the first time I sampled Unconditional Love, I liked it instantly but decided to file it under "guilty pleasure" as the intensely sweet and fruity notes together reminded me of a summertime concoction that I used to wear from Bath and Bodyworks when I was a teenager.

But then I went to the post office and found myself standing in what seemed to be a never ending line. Lost in the reverie of daydreaming (what else is one to do in a long line at the post office?) I was brought out of my thoughts by the lady standing behind me who asked me what scent I was wearing. She said (and I quote) that I smelled "amazing".

Hmmm. This got me thinking. Maybe Unconditional Love wasn't such a throwaway after all. I'm not sure why I instantly label fruity and sweet smelling fragrances as unsophisticated but I had filed this one as such in my mind. The next day I went back and sampled it again, this time the sales girl gave me samples of the scent as well as the firming body emulsion and shower gel in the same fragrance...

And the verdict?

I've got nothing but love for Philosophy's Unconditional Love.

Unconditional Love contains fruity notes, white floral notes, hints of blackberry and black current and finishes off with a cashmere vanilla dry down.

Synthetic Chemical Skincare vs Organic Botanical Skincare

What Do You Look For?

As we all know there are so many skincare products on the market to choose from, the task of choosing the right one can be daunting. What's in it?....How is it represented?....What does it cost?......Is it attractive? Well, it actually boils down to the proof is in the puddin'!

The decision to make a choice comes from many factors but only the last example is what matters:

  • Pricing ~ High or low. Some will shop according to budget and others think unless it is sporting a high price tag it isn't any good or won't work. The same can be true for really inexpensive products, the saying "you get what you pay for" rings true in this instance, but you certainly don't need to pay $100.00 to $200.00 an ounce to get a great skincare product.

  • Packaging ~ Expensive packaging captures our sense of value as to the level of how well something works when very little value is actually placed within the products. This includes the high tech scientific packaging that creates a belief it is the most innovative when most of the ingredients have been around for years.

  • Name Recognition ~ We are bombarded with commercials singing the praises of a long standing company's products, and we purchase on emotion rather than what is actually offered inside.

  • A Name With Innuendo ~ This captures a thought then creates a belief in our head which responds to a promise a name might offer. (ie; Age Reversal, Botox in a bottle, Anti-aging)

  • Sales Pitch ~ These are fine unless the person doing the pitching has little to no real knowledge as to what is in the products or how they work.

  • Ingredients ~ Can be synthetically or chemically created or will be comprised of Organic botanicals in their purest forms to maintain the healing essences for which they are used.
Although all of these things matter to a degree in order to capture the senses of the consumer, the majority of these things are irrelevant if what is inside the package is useless and serves only to create hype surrounding a product.

Chemicals In My Skincare Jar

Natural or synthetically derived products carry with them the process to have them reach their safe form for use in cosmetics. Many of us don't realize what goes into creating an ingredient and what other chemicals are utilized in order to have the finished product be safe. An example of how a synthetically derived ingredient goes from an impurity to a cosmetically safe one is described in my Bismuth Oxychloride Article.

This is not to say that all ingredients that are chemically synthesized are bad for the skin since minerals and iron oxides must go through a chemical process in order for them to be safe to be used in cosmetics. Nothing mined from the earth intended for cosmetics are safe for skin without going through this process. It is more about the level of chemical manipulation in order to create a safe ingredient. Bismuth Oxychloride to be achieved must go through several levels of extreme chemical manipulation in order to make the impure form of bismuth, pure, since in its' raw form it is chemically related to arsenic.

Skincare Improved With Organic Botanicals

Botanicals in most cases are gently extracted through steam distillation, cold pressed, expeller-pressed and in some cases will be chemically extracted such as the case of Grapefruit Seed Extract. Finding this ingredient in its pure form today is not always the case since it is typically solvent extracted. Not to be confused with Grapeseed Oil as its' benefits remain the same of what this oil can offer skin.

Dr. Perricone has the right idea and has written books on the subject about what we put into our bodies as well as what we put on them, and the ramifications which can occur from this. The only reason I furrow my brow at some of what he proclaims, is in his own skincare line of products he utilizes silicone oils, (Dimethicone, Cyclomethicone) propylene glycol, SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate) and parabens. I simply don't understand utilizing a few botanical ingredients for the benefit of skin and anti-aging only to permeate them with a full range of suspect chemicals? This contradicts the basis for why we use organic products in the first place, and there is nothing holistic about his very expensive line of products as he promotes in his books. What is interesting about this as well, a botanical ingredient is far more expensive than a synthetic one in most cases, so what constitutes his price point?........I have no idea!

Understanding Skin Sensitivity Causes

When using either formulation of skincare products whether they are filled with synthetics or with botanicals for fighting aging, it is important to understand the differences and how skin will react. Botanicals just like synthetics can cause a skin sensitivity to an individual, much in the same way a person might be allergic to grasses or pollens in flowers, or poison ivy. These are all natural but some of us will react when coming in contact with them. I personally have allergies to sage when in bloom, and my skin goes ballistic if I even brush up against juniper, yet I can roll in poison ivy and not have a reaction...... go figure!

Synthetics can have the same effect. Some will react in severe ways while others will do just fine. It depends on the level of sensitivity our skin has to the chemical processes an ingredient might go through since it may not be the ingredient necessarily, but what chemicals were used to create it. And this process is not required to be on the label.

What Synthetics Can Pose Problems For Skin Health

Synthetic skincare is widely used, yet synthetic ingredients are being demonized by watchdog groups who claim they can show long term ill effects to our bodies. What I also find however, most of this information is suspect when I see huge data gaps and antiquated information being used to support a "precautionary principle" standard.

The most popular chemicals these political groups claim that are a cause for concern (or should say under attack) are Propylene Glycol, Phthalates, Artificial Fragrances, Dyes and Lakes, and SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate). There are other chemical synthetics infused into skincare lines and many which I can't pronounce, much less spell. These products when used by the consumer may cause a reaction, plug pores, as much as any other certain natural ingredient can, may give pause to what our skin may be absorbing, because our skin can absorb these chemicals at some level. However, it is better to identify the level at which they are actually penetrating deeply enough to reach the dermis layer, whereby crossing into the blood brain barrier. In terms of how the science community describes skin penetration, it is highly unlikely, if the actual truth be known.

To date cosmetics have the best safety record in history and there isn't any reason to believe they are the cause of long term ill effects. Basically, all the lopsided theories in regard to the personal care products is speculative rather than actual science. Make no mistake however, our skin is the largest organ on our body and its our first line of defense against sun, pollution and toxic ingredients whereby creating a barrier against outside assaults to our body, so we must take care of it properly.

Some products use synthetics extensively, which includes preservatives and just a touch of botanicals and claim it is natural or organic for the skin. When reading the ingredient label, you kind of have to wonder, what is the point? When the products primarily consist of synthetic chemicals with a few fancy organics, the benefits an organic can offer is negated by the synthetics used.

The Botanical Ingredient Alternative With True Benefits

When dealing with Botanically derived skincare, the majority of ingredients are highly concentrated, are in their purest form, and through gentle extraction methods, the natural holistic benefits are retained.

Essential oils, Distillates, Nut Butters, Herbal Extracts and Cold Pressed Oils are among the finest and most expensive ingredients found in a skincare line geared toward keeping it pure, natural, with skin reactions being quite rare since many of the ingredients have been shown their benefits throughout the ages in holistic or Ayurvedic medicine.

Synthetics have not and are never used for Holistic Health Care.

Making The Argument

There are those that believe organics can't do the same thing as a synthetic chemical counterpart, convinced that science is perfection for accomplishing the impossible. Well, science is important since it is science combined with nature that creates the best skincare products. Holistic healing and Ayurveda are sciences of ancient origin and it is through the combination of using gentle botanicals, natures' healing processes are in tune with our body, mind and soul. It is the whole package.

Also when using skincare which is comprised of mostly organics, a person used to using synthetically derived skincare will realize how very little of the organic skincare it takes to achieve similar or better results on their skin. Synthetic chemicals can sit on the skin or are absorbed in their unchanged state since they will not synthesize with skin due to them not being synergetic with our skin cells. (Example: Micro Collagen, though it sounds great, does not replace our own collagen)

Organics are by the very definition, synergetic to our bodies since they are derived from living organisms which are bio-available to our skin cells and will be quite soothing and cooling to the skin. They possess skin toning effects, and age-defying properties and can be a collagen stimulant, but they will not go beyond what genetics has created for us. No product can! Only a very tiny bit of a botanical ingredient is necessary. When combined with other rich botanicals, the results are an extremely concentrated effective form of skincare which is in tune with our bodies. Our skin further benefits from a botanical ingredients' effects which provides nutrients rich in vitamins and minerals, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-fungal and antiseptic properties.

Tip: Don't use more than what is directed since this will not make it work faster or better, but will be a waste of product. You will know if you are using too much if your skin feels greasy or oily for any length of time after application. Your skin should feel supple and soft after an application. Products sitting on top of the face is the excess. Our skin can only take up what it needs and anything more is wasted and could cause adverse effects such as having an occlusive effect, perhaps perpetuating more acne cycles.

Proper Application Ratios

The woman on the right is what most of us are used to when applying commercial preparations of skincare. It takes this much in order for our skin to feel moisturized and supple, plus this is how many companies prescribe its' use so they can sell more skin cream since you will use it up much faster. Silicone oils and propylene glycol are what give commercial preparations their slip across the skin, yet this can leave our skin feeling oily or greasy. Also, many companies claim to be oil free, yet I submit to you silicone is a synthetically derived oily substance.

Example: Dimethicones and Cyclomethicones can be found in many serums and face creams including some of the most expensive on the market and can be occlusive to skin.

The woman on the left is using the correct amount for a botanical line of skincare. Just a dab on the tip of the finger is all that is required for best results, and it is about the size of a Pearl. This is ample to do the face, neck, and decolletage. Natural oils, butters, vegetable glycerin combined with moist skin are what provide the slip to botanical preparations. And in their concentrated, purist form are readily absorbed directly into the epidermis layer and beyond, giving truly exceptional benefits through going beyond just sitting on top of the skin.

More On What Can Be Expected For Acne Prone Skin

Now I wanted to explain in more detail about switching skincare regimens since I touched on this in my Acne article and what a person prone to acne may expect. As I explained, when changing skincare regimens acne may appear to get worse over the course of the next several weeks while the skin regenerates. But what I didn't explain is what exactly is going on during this time.

When using synthetic chemicals for clearing up acne, like hydrogen peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, AHA's, or BHA's, these all work to suppress and / or keep pores open and clear, free of sebum buildup through something similar to exfoliation of skin.

When botanicals are used they work in a different context. Botanicals will actually assist your skin and / or body to expel the impurities from your system. A detoxification process is occurring within the skin cells. This can show outwardly such as with the case of acne. This can be in the form of a few new pimples or a massive outbreak.

Now this is the real kicker for some and might be difficult to believe; a pimple takes 3-6 weeks to form under the skin. You will not even know it is there until it pops up of its own accord over time. This is why our faces will get the occasional zit or several pimples here and there. It is all about timing and how and when the pimple began to form. One day of not cleaning our face, wearing a pore clogging makeup, perspiration under a headband left on too long. The pimple forming was created by something we missed or did to our skin several weeks back.

Patience Is Key

So now we introduce an all natural organic line of products designed to detoxify and gently exfoliate through natural fruit acids. Solutions that will not cause burning or stinging like Glycolic Acid in its' concentrated form. Some will either get a little pimple or none at all and their skin will remain flawless, or they may have a severe breakout and will instantly think they are having a reaction to the products. As much as we want to believe it, science tells us otherwise. An immediate reaction within a few days of using botanicals means that the pimples you see whether coming up a few at a time or in a massive way is the detoxification of the impurities being pulled from the skin. This is why acne pops up for those with acneic skin continuously throughout their lives, because with other chemicals the products clear pores of sebum or suppress the acne but don't get to the underlying cause. Detoxing the skin of the impurities that contribute to skin cell buildup and pore blockage such as pollutants and dirt in the air are the real cure. Plus the added bonus of botanical ingredients....they work to dissolve sebum buildup and reduce its' production, giving you a healthier complexion overall.

Most commercial cleansers clean the surface of our skin and can be irritating and drying since many contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (Detergent), but rarely gets into the pores. Only a botanical ingredient can provide skin benefits due to it being synergistic with our skin cells other than a BHA (Salicylic Acid) which can cause delay in cell regeneration due to its composition of it systemically working deep within the pore to keep it clear. This is not detoxifying the skin, but mechanical removal through the use of a chemical for keeping our skin free of acne. This can also be quite harsh to delicate skin, giving the appearance of the skin being in a constant state of inflammation.

An allergic reaction would not be an acne result, but an irritation, swelling, stinging or redness which may occur if you are sensitive to a product or ingredient.

The good and bad news: bad news first..... It can take up to 60 days for a complete detox of your skin and prevention of future outbreaks. This only stands to reason due to the fact it can take up to 6 weeks alone, not a few days, for a pimple to form from something we did to our skin then.

Now for the good news...... Once detox has occurred and we now have created a new environment on the skin, one that resists bacterial growth, then skin will remain healthier and fewer outbreaks to none at all will occur over time. It is simply having to endure the process and to have patience with the progression our skin must go through to be clear of problems. And though frustrating and we all want immediate results, natural holistic remedy is not rapid but works with our own body's immune system to correct what is happening within our bodies and this takes time.

There is one silver lining to this process though...using our mineral powders will help to conceal and calm erythema, soothe the pain associated with acne or skin ulcerations, making the process a bit easier to endure. Women have noted their skin felt less inflamed and acne pain was alleviated during the day after applying their mineral powders. So keep using your minerals during the transition to healthier skin.

Just remember not all types of acne are related to plugged pores solely, other genetic and medicinal or hormonal factors can play a role, but through better skincare even these can be greatly reduced in being a factor in acneic skin. And in some very severe cases, certain types of acne will still require medical attention, certain types which I will not explain here. Sometimes medicine combined with holistic care can bring about excellent results. Great resources to better understand the different types of acne can be found on Web MD, Acne.org, or simply google "acne afflictions" or "different types of acne".

I hope this has explained and clarified the differences in skincare products and how and why they work. For a full description of every ingredient in ONATI Skin Care visit our ingredient glossary.

I wish everyone continued skin health.

salinity

seafoam wire ring, originally uploaded by ebbandflo_pomomama.

dear fine dining seafood restaurant in port moody which my husband took me out to last night

thank you very much for a pleasant evening out with one of the most helpful waitresses ever (she was a real star).
however, please have a word with your chef - tell him simply that adding excessive salt to food, to every food item on my plate, does not increase it's attractiveness to my palate. in the same way that curry spices mask the flavour, too much salt takes away the will to live from my taste buds. it's not the height of culinary skill to able to oversalt every dish until it burns the oral mucosa.

then it's not so much fine dining, but an endurance course.

one day i would like to taste what i am eating when dining out.

thank you
ebb

PS: ditto on the too much pepper just in case s/he is wondering how to jazz up the mains in future.

Barefoot in Paris

One thing I have yet to discuss on this blog is cooking. This topic has been a strange omission on my part as it is such a huge part of my life. I love to cook. Starters, main courses, desserts... I love it all! I am not a cook of the freestyle variety however, and always heavily rely on cookbooks to create my delights. Today, my parents were coming over for lunch and as I have had a recent yearning for French food I got out my trusty cookbook Barefoot in Paris by Ina Garten- otherwise known as the Barefoot Contessa.

I'm a huge fan of the Barefoot Contessa's show and cookbooks- Ina has such a great way of creating delicious recipes that tend to look intimidating on the plate but aren't at all intimidating to make.

So for today's lunch? It was eggplant gratin with a simple salad. I love serving gratins as you can make them the night before and simply pop them into the oven about a half an hour before your guests want to eat. This gratin, which I had never made before, came out great and got rave reviews. But the piece de resistance? My dessert, a Coeur a la Creme. This delicious dish is similar to a panna cotta but done Parisian-style in a heart shaped mold and served with a dash of framboise sauce and some fresh raspberries. It is the easiest dessert in the world to make (another one that you prepare the evening before) and is a real show stopper for your guests.

There is nothing quite like an afternoon spent eating lovely food with the people you love...

I would love to know what you enjoy cooking...

Bon Apetite!

a little something to ease you thru the day

My 'helping hand' for this Friday (or for those in the UK ....).
Cheers!

Losing Sleep Causes Premature Aging

Losing sleep has grown to epidemic proportions in today's society with our economic woes combined with fear of losing our jobs, retirement finances cut by more than half for many, and of course the housing crisis. This is not to exclude those that lost their entire net worth to Ponzi Schemes. Madoff being the most notorious. Hope and optimism for many has been replaced by depression, sleeplessness and anxiety.

Some of us function in a zombie like state doing repetitive tasks we can't even remember doing just a few minutes or hours earlier. A lot of double checking throughout our day becomes the norm. So not only is sleep essential to our health, but to brain function and retaining our short term memory.

In my first paragraph I wanted to utilize similar descriptions as we are seeing in the media on a constant basis. It is getting so every time you turn on the TV, we are constantly bombarded with doom and gloom. It's enough to make anyone think our future is bleak. I admit I have also fallen victim to this media blitz using words like crisis, collapse, catastrophe, freefall, meltdown and deep recession. I do all I can to avoid watching the news anymore since it is literally unhealthy and raises my blood pressure.

More than 25% of Americans are losing sleep on a regular basis. More Americans than ever before are visiting their physicians for some help to alleviate what they are experiencing in their lives right now. Just to get through the daily grind of their job can be brutal.

One thing we sometimes don't realize is fear perpetuates fear and anxiety feeds on itself. And the media descriptions including those used by our government leaders is not helping the psyche of the American people. Our minds can work overtime clouding the issues and not really taking a hard look at the actualities we are currently dealing with. Perception is reality! Anxiety and depression are similar in that we allow ourselves to interpret what we see and hear as complete fact.

Clearly everyone in America is going to be effected in some way or another and as Americans we are strong and our dreams can still be realized. Optimism and prosperity is not dead and things will recover as they have done throughout history. This I believe and I hold on to the ideal that which does not kill us, will only make us stronger.

What we need to do is take the focus off of our surroundings and work toward keeping ourselves healthy throughout this time in our lives. Sleep deprivation is a leading cause of anxiety and depression. When we feel stressed out you would think we would collapse from the sheer exhaustion of everything that causes our stress levels to rise. Unfortunately, the opposite is true. We also allow ourselves to be so consumed with worry we then begin to lash out at one another and the attacks are usually fear driven.

I had a discussion with my doctor about this very thing since I also am not immune to what is occurring around me. I worry about my children, my spouse and our future, as I feel many of us are doing. We can't seem to help ourselves from foreboding thoughts consuming us.

As she explained it to me, it is the "flight or fight" syndrome. When we are placed under stress, we pump adrenalin into our bodies similar to what happens when we are in an accident or under an attack. It is this adrenalin that helps us to react and remain cognizant of our surroundings so we can either fight or run and it gives us a burst of strength and speed. Unfortunately, our bodies can't determine the difference between stress and an actual assault. When our bodies stay in the constant state of preparedness, we never allow our heart or brain to take a break which in turn effects our sleep patterns and actually long term, will weaken us, leaving us exhausted. Yet we try to sleep but can't because the adrenalin continues to flow, leaving us keyed up and edgy.

I personally want to know where the "OFF" button is.

For some of us, me included some days, we literally "FREEZE" and don't function when we feel the pangs of anxiety or fear. It is getting through those moments that is crucial. Sometimes it may be a factor of simply trudging through when you want to quit and climb into bed with covers pulled up close. You know...go into cocoon mode...insulate yourself from all the bad stuff. But don't quit...never, never quit! The simple act of moving forward can show a rainbow on your cloudy day when you least expect it. Try not to hang in the moment since this is the most crippling. For some it may require some medical support. Your doctor can recommend some techniques to help you through those stressful times. Switching to the "off" button is very important and for some it may require medication prescribed by your doctor to assist with some worse case scenarios.

I do want to point out that there are some great things that do work and keep us grounded in sanity and reality. However, I wasn't convinced until I actually tried some. Keeping busy will take the focus off what is happening in our world but this will not relieve stress since in business we are meeting goals and expectations of ourselves and others.

An example for me, my husband took me up north for a 2 hour drive for him to check on a job. We meandered through winding roads, along a beautiful river and snow and rain was falling. Literally the further away from town we got, the more my body began to relax. I could feel my jaw unclench and I actually started to get sleepy. The ride was soothing and helped me focus on the beauty we were surrounded with. I went into quiet mode and it felt wonderful. Ahhh....I found the "OFF" button at last! Getting away from the office for a few hours removed me from phones, emails, and the TV. What should be noted though, as we returned into town, my body began to tense again, only proving to me the drive helped, but once I was brought back to the environment that surrounds me with pressure, the repair is brief. This is why people go on vacation to decompress! Needless to say other techniques need to be employed.

Small trips into downtown Boise for coffee and friends gives my body a break and frees me from the adrenalin cycle within my body. Meditation and Yoga are also coping mechanisms for stress related anxiety. Taking a walk in the fresh air will also do wonders. The "off" button can be found, and it is important we find it everyday, even for a brief period.

The results of never having down time from our stress factors will be, our health will fall into decline. Your body literally ages when we stay in a state of fear or anxiety. Things that will relate to our health are as follows:

  • Cortisol ~ without sleep builds up in our bodies which in turn causes weight gain. Weight gain in turn can raise our Cholesterol levels to unhealthy levels.

  • Migraines ~ An increase in headaches is caused by tension in our neck and jaw.

  • Short Term Memory Loss ~ cognition becomes a struggle when we don't get enough sleep...combine that with overworked and it becomes a recipe for a frustrating day.

  • Depression ~ Can cause a lack of sleep and in turn lack of sleep can cause depression. Can become a vicious cycle, and medical attention may be required for intervention.

  • Digestive Disorders ~ Ulcers and stomach upset can occur when we are at high levels of stress. Causing eating disorders and the inability to keep food down.

  • Illness ~ Our immune system becomes weakened making us vulnerable to disease and viruses. Sometimes in an otherwise healthy person their illness can be more severe than in the past.

  • Hypertension ~ This should be monitored and will need medical attention.

  • Heart Disease ~ Of course the worse case scenario, but very real. We increase our risk of heart attack when all else is out of whack in our systems.
These are just a few internal effects that can occur to our bodies, and should be noted that it will reflect outwardly in our appearance. Things like breakouts, dark circles and puffy eyes, weight gain, weight loss, hair loss (not genetic loss) and muscle atrophy from lack of activity. These are all aging factors for our bodies yet they can be reversed and improved.
  • Begin with a simple walk around the block or in the park.

  • Go to the zoo and make faces at the monkeys.

  • Read a good book that is motivational and will get your mind working again in a positive way. My favorites are "The Secret" and "You Were Born Rich" by Bob Proctor.

  • Take a walk on a beach and allow the sound of the waves wash over you. Squish your toes in the sand.

  • Visit with friends and stay off subject of the negative aspects of our global economy...in other words don't commiserate.

  • Try sitting on the floor and meditate to the sounds of a tropical rain forest.

  • Stay off of caffeine and sugar except in your body scrubs. You don't need anymore adrenalin surges from the rush these two ingredients can cause.

  • Do some gardening as we enter into spring. I love to garden and it removes so much tension for me.

  • Take a drive out of town...get away from the things that remind you of your situation, even briefly.
Although things are not going to get fixed overnight and we are going to continue to feel some emotions as relates to each individual situation...it is still imperative that we all find our "OFF" button to keep us healthy, youthful and free us from our daily anxieties.

Just remember, you are not alone and this is not something you caused and we are all in this together. Compassion and understanding are greatly needed now and it is a time for us to come together. Help others when you can since helping others takes the focus off of our own problems. It can be quite uplifting in fact.

Smile at someone standing in line....Hold a door as you enter a store for the person behind you. Strike up a conversation with someone (yes even a complete stranger) out of the blue. Just today I chatted with a gentleman while I pumped my gas. It seemed as though he appreciated the exchange and for that brief moment I was in "off" mode again. Get away from the office and connect face to face. Too much alone time perpetuates the negative thoughts and if we let it, we'll spin out of control until we may reach a full blown panic attack.

Enjoy the Simple things in life! Get to know your neighbors like our mothers and fathers did many moons ago. Interaction will keep us all connected and grounded in what matters.

Be well, keep the faith and my prayers are with all of us!

Have a great weekend....And for those near a beach, wiggle your toes in the sand for me!

Hugs!

i was tagged!

Yes, I was tagged - by Crystal of kizzdesigns so I now have to ramble on about some random ramblings about me.
  1. Baking is a stress-buster for me. I enjoy big batch cooking and then storing away the provisions in the freezer for more time-starved moments.
  2. My dog, Toby (see above), was left for me to euthanase one night at work. No one could give me a solid reason why such a sweet-tempered dog should warrant the death sentence except that his owners had got tired of him. I took him home. He lived with me for almost 15 years, and even emigrated to Canada with me. Sadly he was eventually put to sleep at the ripe old age of 15 due to failing health. I still miss him and his friend, Mauz, a lot.
  3. I used to be able to dance en pointe.
  4. At university, my favourite drinks were a white russian (with lemonade, not milk) or creme de menthe (!)
  5. I was a goth once upon a time.
OK - the rules say that I have to tag another six people but I'm sure my online friends will breathe a hearty sigh of relief if I just let it lie here!
Happy reading!

Woohoo!
Check this out! I've added the Artfire Rapid Cart to my googlepages website, pomomamadesign dot com.

Dead easy! ... V impressive!

Although Googlepages has a few glitches (and has been superseded by the updated Sites) I've been quite happy with it. (My only whinge is that placing images is 'tricky'.) I also use it to compose newsletters which can then be pasted into email, complete with a "view on the web" link.

ugly hairy purse - meet the world

NB: it's not the ugliest purse I have ever produced (that one will not see the light of day without severe modification) but it possibly the hairiest.
The body is constructed from machine knit swatches of alpaca which were then felted into shape. As a side note, do alpacas live in a rainy climate? If they do, how do they stop themselves from felting solid or are old alpacas recognised by their complete immobility?
The handles are also from the same felted swatches in roughly tubular form - somehow they've taken on the appearance of knotty tree branches (they should fit right in with the Etsy trend of faux bois then, ho ho ho!) and will need some steaming to straighten them out.
The front has been embroidered with red wool flowers and the reverse still shows some of the green yarn guidelines knitted into the swatch.
The purse is lined with a muted green polyester satin print and closes with a snap fastener.
I'm not sure what to do with it now. I think it's quite cute but since I'm closing my Dawanda shop at the end of the month I won't have a dedicated venue for all things fibrelicious unless I mix it in a bit!
Maybe I should start pushing my ecrater store as ebbandfibre?
