reason why campers choose

A major reason why campers choose to secure the state park passes is
that they allow easy access to the various camp-sites. These passes
make the camping experience more enjoyable and comfortable experience.
Hot showers, clean restrooms, convenience stores, boat rentals, boat
launches, weekend movies, marinas, playgrounds, hiking trails, small
beaches, horse riding and fire pits are some of the amenities that
state parks offer. The restrooms are kept clean even though they are
public.

Most of the state parks also offer water and dump
stations for the convenience of the campers, but there may be extra
fees charged for using these additional amenities. These amenities are
offered regularly to campers who prefer sleeping outdoors and use
tents.

Sherlock Holmes- The Movie

I am not sure if it is possible to convey my excitement with words right now but I will endeavor to do so.

I just saw the trailer for Sherlock Holmes the movie starring Robert Downey Junior and Jude Law and I'm jumping with **happiness** inside! This film, directed by Guy Ritchie, stars Robert Downey Jr. as the original mastermind detective, Sherlock Holmes. Jude Law is cast as his infamous sidekick, Watson.

My obsession with Sherlock Holmes has been going on for the past twenty years (at least) since I was a little girl. I loved watching the Jeremy Brett version on PBS with my family and the first time I went to London, you better believe that 221b Baker Street was the first stop on my list of tourist attractions (yes, even before Buckingham Palace).

It looks like Guy Ritchie's movie will be a sexed up/ Hollywood version of the stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and I'm OK with that. In fact, I'm more than OK with that- I can't wait!

Sherlock Holmes comes out Christmas Day, 2009.

You can view the trailer here.

take my child to work day (pretty please)

busking plus one
gold star to the busker with the big guitar who is fulfilling his partner's wish

If only!
I haven't tried asking but I think it would be a big no.

Please take my child(ren) to work day was started (hopefully in semi-seriousness) to draw some attention to the plight of SAH-parents everywhere who don't have the perk of a day/night/minute off in 365 days. OK, that might be a bit of an exaggeration but most of the time 24.7.365 sums up life as a mum at home. Wee Guy is in school now (well, he was last week before the summer 'holidays' started - note how holiday is in quotation marks) and yes, he has a day of daycare so I technically get a few hours 'leisure time' (again note the quotation marks) but if he's sick, off colour or just plain being non-sociable that day it isn't daddy who fills in. And it's daddy who earns the salary so this is The Wisest Choice.

But I have noticed a distinct lack of credible time off, career advancement, regular breaks scheduled in my latest employment choice hence making the most of alternate or surrogate parenting arrangements which get me some head space.

Take Your Kids To Work Day is something that all at-home parents do every day of the year (unless I somehow lost the memo reminding me that being a stay-at-home parent is not really work). So maybe today should be renamed Please Don't Leave My Kids At Home With Me Today day or possibly even Please Stay At Home With My Kids While I Get To Leave The House In Less Than 15 Minutes And Whoop It Up Without Them day?

There must be a Hallmark card for that somewhere ...

take your dog to work day

toby and canoe
looking east from Deep Cove

So today is "Take your Dog to Work Day". Sadly I no longer have a dog to take to work but when I did Toby frequently accompanied me wherever I went, when possible.
He came to work with me in Newcastle, to the small animal practice I worked from. He often came out in the car on housecalls and traveled with me on every emergency call at night. When I switched practices he stayed with me at the clinic when I was on call. He was great company.
When I moved to London it no longer was possible to bring him with me on the morning commute so he stayed at home long hours until I got back in the evening. He suffered dreadfully with separation anxiety until we found him a dog walker and then doggy daycare kenneling. Since he was ours and our responsibility we stuck it out with him, trying to make the best. Not ideal, and even now I am not at all in favour of people getting a dog when they will be out of the house all day. It's just not fair to keep a dog like this.

Eventually we moved to Canada - he came with us even though by then he was over 10 years old. I was once more able to be with him all the time ie. I was unemployed! We explored Vancouver together, spending long days walking on the beach or hiking thru Stanley Park. It was bliss for both of us. At the weekend we'd go on longer adventures to Hemlock Valley or even up to Whistler. Once the Wee Guy arrived Toby was content to trot along beside the stroller on whatever mission we found ourselves on.
He was euthanased for age-related issues just over four years ago and there will truly never be another dog like him.

Shave Your Legs Without The Dreaded Nicks!

Well it is that time to whip out the old razor and give the creaking stems a bit of a shave. I absolutely hate this day in my week. It is a chore that I could live without. The ever vigilance of shaving my legs while trying to avoid all the nicks or cuts becomes tedious.

I have searched every which way to Sunday on different methods of getting my legs silky smooth, but not without the misery which accompanies it.

Removing One Hair At A Time

I remember when I was a young girl and wanted to start shaving my legs. All my friends were doing it and I felt like I was the only one who hadn't shaved beneath my knee socks. I remember slipping into the bathroom with my moms razor and giving it the old clumsy try. I had no clue what I was doing, but managed to pull it off with minimal damage.

After a few tries, and after my mom spotted the band-aid clad legs, she surprised me with a cool gift. I could finally start shaving my legs and I no longer had to be banished to a quiet corner in my bathroom...... I was so excited. She gave me my first lady shaver and it was way cool. A very modern convenience for the 70's. You know the one....... No water, no shave cream, just a dry run across those fuzzy legs. I flicked that baby on and the whir of the little motor was exhilarating. I could now shave without the mess and blood that would run down my leg.

I began to shave away and it hummed along. Oops, a glitch....a snag....something is happening here.... each hair on my leg felt as though it was being plucked out one at a time. Keeping this little gem sharp became a whole new task. Went into the junk drawer after only a few uses.....too much work and it was anything but quick!

Forced to turn to the trusty razor again, since I knew it could be done faster and without having to make it a separate chore. I got the hang of it and with minimal bloodshed, too...it was quick and easy in the tub or shower and I was done with it!

Did I mention the nicks and cuts? No one told me I had to keep this thing sharp or that you needed to keep a good supply of band-aids handy. I mean I was thirteen wanting to be twenty-one.

I continued to use my trusty razor off and on, forever, until I learned of some of the new ways of removing unsightly hair. Remember the Epi-lady, that thing that whisked hair away by stripping or ripping them out of the pore. Now that was real fun! Who thinks of these contraptions? Not a woman I can tell you that much!

Oh Just Love That Burn!

In my 30's, I decided to give the waxing method a try and to my chagrin, this was like stripping skin for me. Plus the heat of the wax I didn't really care for. As the wax hardened a bit, I felt my skin begin to tighten....... a very weird sensation. It left my skin sore and it looked like I had road rash on my legs...never mind that it left a pain on my poor skin as though someone took a blow torch to it. Plus little strays were left behind leaving me to touch up with a razor anyway.

How do women stand this?....Having their skin ripped off in one whoosh with a wax covered strip..... and that is if it is removed with one pass..... Aye caramba! Back to the razor! Hairy legs were looking pretty good right then.....after all what's wrong with hairy legs?

Sticky Business

Then there was the new-fangled trend of sugaring I ventured into when I turned 40. I thought this might be interesting. The sales pitches on the infomercials told how easy it was, and painless too! Are they kidding? I remembered the debacle with waxing, so I gingerly would start to pull the swatch knowing this was gonna hurt!

It was like having 30 grit sandpaper raked across my skin. Very similar to waxing, but you lay this fabric strip over the sugar product and somehow it becomes like an adhesive to the fabric when you press down, and then supposedly whisk the hair right off....in theory maybe! Plain and simple, you have to rip that sucker off like removing a band-aid. Did it get all the hair?....NO,..... of course not!

Yes this method was wonderful, especially right after, as you gimp around the room moaning, stopping only long enough to grasp and caress the assaulted limb for 5 minutes before moving on to the next section. I have never finished an entire leg to date. I am a wimpy girl! Back to the razor again!

Burn It Off!

This was an interesting premise....slather a cream on your legs like Neet or Nair, which is tantamount to chemically burning off the hair and then just simply wash it away. This worked for awhile and then like everything else, I didn't like the wait time, the goop got all over things and it sensitized my skin, even touching my legs became increasingly irritating. And the burning smell, well...have you ever smelled a rotten egg or sulfur? Next!

Keeping It Sharp And Creamy!

My trusty razor wins by the mile....But I am always on the prowl for the coolest one to stick in my shower. One trick for sure is keeping the razor very sharp....something I learned after many cuts and nicks. I use to think it was a slip of the hand or the blade was too sharp, or going too fast, but I soon realized when I marked the calender of when I opened up a new blade to how many times I had used it by the time the nicks started happening...the time frame that past was substantial.

Next important criteria for nick free shaving is a creamy lather on the leg. Now I have tried shave creams made just for this, but they didn't work either. I was still not getting a good shave....the shave creams didn't provide enough slip, and the occasional nick still occurred. I used my favorite soap....nope still drag and cuts. What was a girl to do?

The Answer Was Right In front Of Me!

Well...here I am, 50 yrs old and I still had not figured out a completely nick free, comfortable way to get my legs smooth. I was so sick and tired of the ritual of this process that I reduced it to once a week. Fortunately, my hair is blond so I am able to get away with this easily!

Suddenly I noticed an old bar of soap sitting on my counter from when I used it to wash my face. Wonderful for the time I used it until I figured out the alkalinity from the soap made my makeup change color. This was a creamy facial bar designed for softening and moisturizing skin and it had just been sitting there gathering dust. "Mmmm....this could work", I think to myself!

I took it with me into the shower on my next ritual day and the lather from this wonderful soap which I loved so much for my face, has become my Holy Grail for shaving the stems. The lather is extremely creamy and the razor literally floats across my leg....no drag....no nicks....no dryness.
I have not had another cut or nick since using this for my shaving needs.

What is this wonderful bar of creamy goodness? It is called Alaffia Shea Butter Facial Bar. They are not kidding when they describe this as a rich and creamy moisturizing handmade soap.

This may not be ideal to use on my face anymore, or for anyone else that may have alkaline skin, but for taking care of your legs, it is fantastic and outperforms anything I have tried specifically formulated for shaving the legs. Give it a try!

If you don't care to purchase this online you can probably find this jewel at your local food Co op or health food store. Just make sure you purchase the correct one since they have added another face bar to the line and I cannot comment on it. Their African Black Soap is also fantastic, but does not have the creamy lather you need. Wonderful for acne though! In fact I would recommend this soap for those that suffer with acne on the body, such as chest and back areas. You may experience some tingling when using this soap. The occasional zit on face got zapped whenever I used it, but this soap is not necessarily recommended for the face...just a bit of an experiment!

Of course I prefer my ONATI Skin Care for my everyday facial needs. And I no longer have to worry about high alkalinity or acidity. All products perfectly pH balanced to create a healing environment for better skin health.

Small Tip: You will recognize your razor is getting dull when you have to make more than one pass over the area. Any more than that is a waste of time and the likelihood of a cut or nick is increased.

Well that is it..... just another day in my life! Have a great weekend!

The Perfect Guest Bedroom

Living in Santa Monica, my husband and I receive a lot of house guests- many of them come from England- many are friends and family from America. It might have something to do with our close proximity to the beach or the beautiful California sunshine, but I can't help but think it's because I've finally mastered the art of keeping a well-appointed guest bedroom.

Every now and then we receive an unexpected or last minute guest and I've learned (the hard way) that I should always have our spare bedroom shining and ready to go. The last time we were in England we had an unexpected house guest stay in our place while we were away- I was in agony wondering what state the guest bedroom was in and vowed to never have to worry about that again.

Here are my tips for creating a cozy guest bedroom.

- A spotlessly clean room, of course. Don't forget the cobwebs in the corners...

- Clean, white sheets, a fluffy duvet and new-ish pillows (get rid of any pillows that sag on both sides when you hold them up with one hand... that means they are full of dust mites and dead skin cells... yuck).

- Ample lighting. We recently installed recessed lights in the ceiling and also have an antique- looking lamp by the bed.

- No clutter. Be ruthless- the eye can become accustomed to seeing a stack of old computer manuals in the corner (this I know from experience *yikes*) Edit. Edit. Edit.

- Plenty of fancy hangers for your guest to hang their clothes on. I like the cloth kind with little bows. Also, at least two empty drawers for them to keep their folded clothes in.

- A few interesting books by the bedside table. If you have a television in the room, a stack of DVDs for them to watch if your guests have jet lag and can't sleep.

- A spotless bathroom, fully stocked with extra tissue paper and extra essential items they might have forgotten like razors, toothpaste etc.

- Fluffy, sumptuous white towels folded and placed at the end of their bed with a new bar of soap. (I also like to have a bottle of body wash in the shower, in case they don't like to use bar soap. Right now I love Nivea body wash in Happiness).

- And finally, if you have time, spend the night in the guest bedroom yourself and see if you notice anything that could use improving...

There you have it. My essential tips for a perfect guest bedroom. Now for all those other rooms in the house...

I would love to hear any tips that you use to keep your guests cozy...

What Does Hypoallergenic And Noncomedogenic Really Mean?

I absolutely have a fascination with beauty industry buzz words such as hypoallergenic and noncomedogenic, and how they are used as a marketing strategy for describing beauty products and cosmetics sold worldwide. Many leading manufacturers use these terms in their day to day mantra and expose us to them by way of their advertising dollar.

Are these words a useful terminology?
To a degree since for most of us that shop for our products, we have a tendency to look for these on the label since we are cognizant to their meaning through advertising.

Are they an accurate way of describing a cosmetic or skincare product?
Not really since everyone's skin is different and not a single manufacturer can absolutely guarantee that their product will not cause a problem for all consumers.

Hypoallergenic....What Is It?

This descriptive was used first in a cosmetic campaign dating back to 1953. Noted for a particular cosmetic or skincare product to cause fewer allergic reactions. But it doesn't mean that the product you may be relying on to keep your skin healthy based on this term will still not cause skin to have a reaction.

Noncomedogenic.....What Is It?

This descriptive is typically used again in cosmetics and skincare campaigns to describe their products as not blocking pores, also known as non-occlusive. And of course as many of us know, not blocking pores is a good thing since this is also what will help reduce acne on the skin.

What Does This Really Mean For The Consumer?

These terms sound so scientific don't they, so they must have been tested...right? I mean with such a technical descriptive and through years of subliminal marketing, we have come to accept them as fact and to make us feel safe in selecting the product which is described this way. They must be true!

Although there is much anecdotal evidence scattered throughout forums, message boards, and testimonials from clients, (I have had quite a few myself) which provides evidence that the terms hypoallergenic and noncomedogenic must be accurate, there actually isn't any proven data in clinical trials and has yet to be tested by the US Food and Drug Administration as to the validity of such terms.

However, it is a fact that prevention of occluded pores will definitely reduce acne, especially for those that are prone to acne, but not all forms of acne are caused by blocked pores. So noncomedogenic used as a descriptive helps identify a certain products unlikelihood to cause acne. Products making this claim, I don't know how many times, have caused me to have a breakout. Acne has many other factors that contribute to different outbreaks and they are not all caused by blocked pores alone. But it is extremely important to prevent clogging the pores whenever possible. It will help..... and certainly won't hurt.

When dealing with the term hypoallergenic, this for me is so broad reaching, it is actually quite laughable. I have seen countless beauty products being advertised using this buzz word. I personally have used skincare products that have made this claim and then my skin goes ballistic. Women have written to me about using certain products containing a certain ingredient, identifying it as giving their skin grief.

Have they always identified the true culprit in their skin condition?
Not always...in fact I wrote an article about a correspondence with a customer concerned about Kaolin Clay and as it turned out, it was not the source of her skin problems.

This is the crux of the matter, with so many ingredients in skincare products, it is difficult to narrow it down to just one particular one. In fact it could be several combined, or it may be just one that when mixed with another certain ingredient causes something similar to a chemical reaction.....but let it stand alone, and the skin may not have a reaction. Unless you have access to an individual ingredient to patch test, it is merely an educated guess as to the real allergen within the product.

As in the case of hypoallergenic claims, certain ingredients can cause skin to react with rashes, irritation, burning, itchiness, scaly patches and many other anomalies can occur. Citric Acids (AHA) and Salicylic acid (BHA) can be very irritating for many women and should not be used, especially on those with rosacea. Bismuth Oxychloride is another major source of irritation and itchiness for women including exascerbating acne conditions. Certain Micas will also pose a problem for some. Retinol can cause burning and itching of the skin. And these are only a few examples since I know of women, including myself that have a long list of other ingredients that will cause their skin problems. Paraben allergies are one more!

So Why Do Manufacturers Use These To Promote?

To capture your dollar and to give you a sense of safety you have chosen a product that won't harm you or your skin. These terms are very scientific sounding, however until there is mandated testing and some kind of certification process offered through the FDA, allowing a manufacturer to show their clinical proof, these claims are anecdotal at best and they will continue to use them as a keen marketing hype.

However, these scientific sounding terms will not be used to describe our products since their meaning does not go unchallenged and they really do not have a scientific basis, and many in the medical community do not recognize these terms.

Dermatologists, unless they are into selling a line of products themselves, will not use these terms and will advise you to discontinue use if a certain product is giving you fits, such as a burning rash or itchy skin. Also, manufacturers place on their labels the same warning.

Now hang on a minute, how can they be described as hypoallergenic, yet a disclaimer is also on the label? Isn't this a contradiction of terms?

This is similar to weight loss programs....you know what I mean, the endless disclaimer in teeny tiny print at the bottom of your TV screen; "These results are not typical. Results can vary from individual to individual". Again, they realize that we are individuals and we have different metabolisms, and weight loss programs are not a one size fits all. Some work and some don't. Trial and error...kind of says it all!

Confused Yet?

Simply put, they place this disclaimer on the label because they are fully aware that not any product can be all things to all people. Everyone's skin is different! Again, they are marketing to the masses, and though there are few in number which may have a reaction, it is through these subliminal messages being used as their ingenious strategy, that has worked to suck in the consumer, myself included, before I got really, really, really smart!!!

We have come to accept it as scientific fact, and with this type of clinical sounding terminology, we become complacent that we are buying the best product for our skin.

Even with our line of mineral cosmetics and ONATI Skin Care line, we cannot absolutely guarantee to be completely irritant free, we certainly know the minerals and botanicals we selected to use in our powders and skincare products to be extremely safe, and are FDA Regulated and Certified for cosmetic use. We are aware however, there are some women and men with extremely sensitive skin, yet for those consumers we hope they give us a try. With our products we feel we can help improve the texture and condition of their skin and our formulations possess the lowest risk of irritants available on the market today. We have omitted the worse offenders that are known to cause ongoing problems for the skin. We always provide a full ingredient list on every jar and bottle and they are displayed on our website for every product offered so you can shop with confidence in knowing exactly what you are getting in your skincare regimen.

Literally, the only way one can tell if a product is going to create a problem for their skin, is to try it! Ingredient labels are an excellent guide, especially if you have had your skin allergy tested and the irritant is known to you.

Remember, many ingredients get blamed for doing certain things to the skin and even to the negative, anecdotal tales of woe on what may or may not have been a problem for a certain skin type can take on a life of its own on the internet. Trying to determine if something is true or not can become a frustrating task.

Rice Powder for instance, has been maligned significantly as to it causing acne and feeding bacteria on the face, when the opposite is true. But you see when it is put out there over and over by the consumer not having an actual knowledge of a certain ingredient, it is easy to make one the scapegoat of their skin problems. Subliminally by others, they have been told to watch out for a certain ingredient when they have no actual data to support it, hence the consumer reacts with a negative.

However, we have had huge positive responses in support of this ingredient and the holistic industry of Ayurvedic medicine has used this for centuries as a poultice in healing ulcerations of the skin and bleeding pimples. Also it has been released from being included in the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, department of United States Department of Commerce, due to it being completely non hazardous under normal use. This is actually the most (hypoallergenic) safest ingredient we could use in the beauty industry today, not excluding our dietary needs for avoiding allergic reactions.

Truth in labeling is really about taking sales hype with a grain of salt, realize our genetic predisposition to various things we are exposed to in our environment and to the products we use each day, and know as with anything, trial and error is a big part to discovering what works best for us. Don't rely on marketing pitches since they typically take us down the primrose path to youth and beauty with promises we'll look 20 again!

Only three things to remember, love who you are (fine lines and all), take care of yourself and....Always Celebrate Your Natural Beauty!

Product Review: Chi Silk Infusion

It is rare when I use a beauty product that yields fabulous results instantly- so ever since I tried out Chi Silk Infusion this morning, I've been dying to tell you about it.

Chi Silk Infusion
is a hair serum that can be used as a leave-in treatment after showering or as a styling aide for dry hair. It is meant to add a silky texture and sheen to your hair while protecting it from heat.

Now, my hair has always been dry- so the fact that this is a heat protectant really appealed to me. My major hair goal in life is to give moisture, I never imagined that my hair could have a silky finish. That was always for other women- namely supermodels. But today after shampooing and conditioning my hair I combed in a small, dime sized amount of Chi Silk Infusion and blow dried it as usual. I could instantly feel the difference. Silky, smooth, soft and (dare I say!) shiny, I'm calling this a miracle in a bottle!

I purchased mine at Rite-Aid for the sale price of $10.99. I've seen online that the product can run anywhere from $20 to $10, depending on the size.

Chi Silk Infusion can be purchased at drug stores nationwide or online at: www.drugstore.com or www.target.com

MacBook Pro

My faithful and trusty iBook that I've had for the last five and a half years breathed its last breath yesterday... and I must say I was a little sad to let it go! *But* I am now writing to you from my gorgeous, shiny and new 13 inch MacBook Pro. I am in love with this laptop already. The design is so sleek: backlit keys (!), gorgeous titanium looking frame made of recyclable materials(!)

The website says that it is 'thin and light... polished and refined' and I have to agree. This is the type of laptop that James Bond would have. It will probably take me months to navigate around all of the new technology but luckily I got Apple's One to One service where I have an entire year of personal tutorials from a member of Apple's genius bar. I'm looking forward to writing on my brand new friend for many years to come.

I would love to know what you write on...
seaglass colours
scottish seaglass from 'home'

I'm probably hitting this a little off the blog boil but there have been two articles lately concerning dear old Etsy. The first, accusing the site of peddling a fraudulent feminist myth, is soundly smacked down in a hissy fit by the second, both roundly missing the point almost made in the first. As usual with all things Etsy, the most interesting info is gleaned in the comments, cupcake vs. non-cupcake for the most part. It seems impossible to be merely neutral about Etsy but why the tendency to hang up critical thinking by the forum door - oh, OK it gets a little sticky with the frosting. I get ya!

Blind devotion to the cause is one thing but please don't let the sprinkles obscure the continued insulting of stay-at-home parents (psst! in etsyland, being a SAHM is not a real job). Interestingly this continues to be peddled despite, as stated in the first article, the site being awash with the fairer sex (with some notable and vociferous exceptions ........... oh, they've been muted!).

At last, an outside observer has pointed out that much of the much lauded quit your day job series (QYDJ) isn't. Sure it enables mum to stay home with the kiddies but not without a salaried full-timer partner in the hazy background (who often has to assist with packing Etsy orders into the small hours too). None of the QYDJ-ers I've read are doing anything more than what I'm doing and I'm not glorifying my Etsy-sistence as a quit my job chronicle. Until I can pay for a housekeeper and childcare, I'm still doing my regular day job in addition ....... and so are the majority of QYDJ mums I've read (note: only one was honest enough to admit it).

What irks me is that this sanctioned dismissal of stay-at-home parenting continues .... and that none of the (female) cupcakes bats an eyelid thru the frosting. Would this happen on a male-dominated site? Somehow I cannot imagine a masculine clientele lapping up complete dismissal of a whole sector of male employment, as well as all the other disciplinary, muting, shop closure, smack down crap that goes on.

Gluten Free Mineral Makeup! Is It Necessary?

Gluten Free...What's The Skinny?

This is an interesting and pointed question about gluten free mineral makeup or any makeup product whether it be lipsticks, glosses, powders or liquid foundation.

I haven't actually had too many customers inquire about this particular issue, however, the concern about gluten free makeup is a real one for those who have Celiac Disease and is the main reason I am finally conveying my research on this subject. I also updated my mineral makeup foundation portion of my site to reflect our products do not have gluten in them.

A new customer recently contacted me about her condition and wanted to make sure my mineral makeup was gluten free as it related to our use of Rice Powder. Fortunately, rice powder contains no gluten and is on the list for substituting it for other dietary flours. Furthermore, our rice powder is cosmetic grade, is modified and refined (no coarse texture) and is no way similar to rice flour you would find in a specialty store.

What Makes Some Sensitive to Gluten?

Celiac disease is a digestive disease that damages the small intestine and interferes with absorption of nutrients from food. People who have celiac disease cannot tolerate gluten, a protein in wheat, rye, and barley. Gluten may be found mainly in foods but may also be found in everyday products such as medicines, vitamins, and lip balms.

For instance, Vitamin E can be sourced from Wheat Germ so this is a concern for those who require their diet to be gluten free. Reading ingredient labels becomes a way of life and this information is very important in order for people afflicted with this disease to keep it under control since there is no cure, only preventative treatment at the present time.

The All Important Question....Can Gluten Be Absorbed Through The Skin?

The answer is "no"!.....this common misconception comes from those who have been misinformed or they are unsure due to the endless confusion about this subject being propagated all over the internet. Many doctors are also unsure, however, one source that I consistently check with is the Mayo Clinic Resource Center.

Bottom line, ingesting whole grains which are primarily found in processed flour, pasta, breads and cereals or using a mouthwash or toothpaste that may contain gluten from other sources like vitamin E, artificial flavor or certain types of food starches is what triggers Celiac symptoms. This is another reason to read labels very carefully.

The reason why some may feel they need to avoid mineral makeup or any skincare product containing gluten is based on another form of the disease known as dermatitis herpetiformis. This results in an itchy, blistering rash. Although it is linked to gluten intolerance, it is controlled through avoiding ingestion of gluten, not by avoiding putting anything containing gluten on the skin. Unless you are swallowing your cosmetics, the concern for gluten free makeup should be quite low.

Areas around the mouth can be affected causing further confusion since a reaction to something else in the cosmetic may be causing a problem and gluten becomes the suspect. Mineral makeup and liquid makeup can be the culprit only in the case of a person having a habit of licking the areas around the mouth or their lips after makeup application. Again ingesting product! It is the subtle things we do we may not even be aware of causing us the most grief. However, since celiac disease is an autoimmune disease, it makes our bodies less tolerant of many things that an otherwise perfectly healthy person would not react to. So only your dermatologist can help you identify the culprit through allergy testing if skin reactions continue. It is probably also a good idea to work in unison with a doctor specializing in Internal Medicine.

But for dealing with the subtleties of makeup application, wiping the areas of your mouth with a wet washcloth after putting on your makeup can prevent you from ingesting even a minute amount. Also, not a good idea to eat right after putting on your makeup since again, you will ingest the powder or liquid with the first bite of food if you did not clean off the areas of the mouth first.

What To Watch Out For!

After all of this....it should be noted that some cosmetics do need to be avoided overall for those reactive to gluten. Lip products, whether it be lipstick or plain lip balms can have ingredients which can cause a reaction. Again, not because it is absorbed through the skin, but because of the location.

It is a known fact that anything we wear on our lips gets ingested, maybe it is in very small increments, but ingested all the same. And if these products have gluten in them, the wearer can have an intense response to the product being used.

When in doubt read labels and for best case scenario ask the makeup manufacturer for sources of Vitamin E. This ingredient can also be sourced from soy, various nuts and oils, olives and avocado. Jojoba oil is rich in vitamin E. Also check with your doctor to make sure products containing Hydrolyzed Wheat Proteins are acceptable for use on the lips. Avena Sativa (oat starch) however, has been classified also as gluten free and is part of a gluten free diet......remember though that this ingredient in cosmetics or skincare has been purified and refined similar to rice powder.

To all those who suffer from this disease my heart goes out to you. I can only imagine the trouble it causes to the body. Please be well!

And for those who may know someone with this insidious disease, here is an extensive list in PDF format of food sources to keep an eye out for giving you a Gluten Free Kitchen. It also provides further education of taking care of yourself to keep handy in the kitchen or to take to the grocery store. Pass it along and share it with your friend, family, coworker or anyone you know who may be currently dealing with a recent diagnosis.

Take Care! Hugs!

Product Review: Neutrogena Summer Glow

It has been about a year since I started my search (connoisseur-style) for the best in self tanners. I've come up with quite a few great ones- I love love love the self tanning veil by L'Occitane for my face, and I have an affinity for several of Clairins self tanning products, such as the self tanning instant gel and the delicious self tanning cream. These products are all wonderful, and produce the desired effect, but with one slight problem- they are un peu cher (read: expensive!).

So I decided to give the drug-store variety self tanner a try and I must say... I am pleasantly surprised! Neutrogena Summer Glow Daily Moisturizer SPF 20 is my latest in self tanning obsessions. This lotion is lightweight, and only has a subtle 'self-tanning' fragrance- in fact, it smells mainly like soap (which is a good thing- I have yet to find a tanning product that is fragrance-free). The color builds gradually and takes about a week to fully materialize, but when it does- it is, as promised, a natural looking 'glow'. I can't help but be really excited about the SPF 20 as well. Any product that takes out the added step of applying spf is welcomed by me. And, of course, the most alluring thing is that Neutrogena Summer Glow retails at around $8. Very affordable...

Neutrogena Summer Glow Daily Moisturizer in SPF 20 can be found in drugstores nationwide.

Skin Care Switch- Rare Minerals

I like to call my skin delicate (which is a nice way of saying problematic). It is sensitive, prone to breakouts (even still in my late 20's!) and slightly dry all rolled into one exciting package. Other than these minor problems I love my skin. I just have to work a little harder at finding the right skincare regimen to keep it looking great.

For years I've used Dermalogica and have had stellar results. I've tried nearly every product in their line... my favorites being the daily microfoliant, the daily resurfacers and the special cleansing gel. They also have wonderful masques- my two favorite being the sebum clearing masque and the multivitamin power recovery masque.

Dermalogica's products have worked wonders for me over the years but lately I have noticed that my skin is starting to look a little dull. So I've decided to jump ship and try out another skin care line. I think it will be good for my skin- which appears to be currently suffering from boredom.

I am a huge Bare Minerals fan and am in love with their make up, so I was really excited to hear about their new line of skin care called Rare Minerals.

I've purchased the Rare Minerals cleanser, which is called Renew & Reveal. This is a soap-free, irritant free mineral cleanser (perfect for my sensitive skin) that has a similar texture to Dermalogica's microfoliant. It comes out like a powder on your hand and when activated with water, turns into a foam. I've only used it twice but I can already tell I love the delicate texture and squeaky clean, non-drying feeling I get when I use it.

The product I am most excited about using, however, is the Rare Minerals Skin Revival Treatment. This is a nighttime mineral treatment that supposedly helps to minimize pores and improve the overall condition of your skin. The powder actually comes in different tints and purportedly has skin renewing properties. I have just tried it for the very first time and must say that I like the tint it gives my skin... hopefully it wont come off on my pillow!

I'll be using these products for the next few months and will keep you updated on the condition of my skin.

The Rare Minerals Cleanser retails for about $32
The Skin Revival Treatment retails for about $60

Both products can be purchased at: www.bareescentuals.com or www.sephora.com

ebb submersion reverse

reverse of "submersion" art clay silver pendant, currently on sale in the Port Moody Art Centre

Last night I attended the YWCA Women of Distinction awards in Vancouver. My nominee didn't win in her category but the evening was amazing, spent in the company of so many inspiring and talented women.

It was a late night for me, and no I wasn't drinking since I had a drive back ...

..... but I still got up this morning and managed to put on my shirt inside out, and then attended my citizenship test and interview in Downtown Vancouver.

Is a wardrobe malfunction sufficient grounds for refusing citizenship?

I'll have to wait 4-6 motnhs to find out.

News And Updates At Sterling Minerals Cosmetics

Well I am feeling excited and nervous at the same time. I have had many requests to produce video tutorials on my mineral cosmetics and to share news and information on skin health, or other products or ingredients in video format.

Although this is definitely a viable option for my company, I have been reticent in taking the first step to doing this. I very much enjoy writing to my followers each week but I am not sure how comfortable I would be in front of the camera.

However, with that stated, I took the leap into the unknown and purchased my hand dandy Flip HD video camera the other day. This little gadget is so incredibly simple that the technically challenged will find it the answer to their prayers. I have been playing around with it for a few days and of course I am aghast at watching myself live. There is a learning curve of getting to feel natural in front of the camera and I am nowhere near that yet! In fact I feel a bit silly and awkward at the same time.....Never mind the fact it shows up every little detail, including a hair out of place. This is great for product definition but when trying to hide those few extra pounds or the brand new pimple I may wake up with, there is no fooling this little gem of a camera.

With mineral makeup on and teeth brushed, I practice, practice, practice. I manage to entertain myself as I watch my monologue unfold in playback mode. Trying to keep a straight face has become the challenge of the day. Thank goodness for the erase button!

There are still many things to learn, including how to edit, upload on to youtube and blip.tv and make the lighting perfect so it will be easy to watch. The camera seems to be the simplest factor in producing videos. It is the editing software and the instructions for utilizing on video promo sites that will take the most time. All those that have gone before me make it look so simple.

I very much look forward to fulfilling the requests by many and hope my videos will meet the desires of those watching. I will still write each and every week on my skincare guide, however, I will move in the direction of supplementation through video presentations. As with anything, experience will overcome the uncertainty, and I am always ready to meet a challenge. And I know I will have fun doing it.

Wish me luck and you will be able to access them through conventional channels, yet we will archive them at Sterling Minerals In The Spotlight which is also a recently added new addition to our site.

Thanks for the inquiries and giving me that final push to improve my relationship with our customers subject to their requests. I will notify my readers when we launch our first official video. As to the subject matter...this will pertain to meeting our goals for information requested by my customers, past, current and future.

Have a great weekend!

nobody knows .....

nobody nose

clutch of nose rings, freshly picked (!) from the tumbler

or do they?

Maybe I'm just being sensitive, but I'm noticing a lot more discussion about Life Outside of Parenting in mummyland. My twitterverse is seeing the subject a lot more, and blog posts (including mine) debate the matter daily. Even a phone conversation yesterday had me musing on whther stay-at-home parenting should be All There Is in life right now, or is it right to want/expect more? Am I being selfish or realistic in trying to forge a life aside from mothering? Is my wish for a some financial independance getting in the way of delivering domestic duties? What long-term and short-term effects will it have on the Wee Guy? What should I realistically expect from life as a mum?

In some ways I am already forging ahead with some quasi-independance - my fledgling craft business runs in, around (and in spite of) the family and has been relatively self-supporting for two years. But it's hardly going to pay the bills. Recently I sat down and crunched some numbers to calculate what I needed to earn to support my family. However, this was calculated for a working week of 40 hours ie. 5 days of 8 hours each. Currently my available working hours are just 2.5 hours per day. When the Wee Guy starts Grade One, my working day will only double since school hours are at best part-time! ..... and these are just my working hours for paid employment. Women still shoulder the majority of domestic and household duties so I could expect to continue with my unpaid position without respite.

So what do I realistically expect to achieve? I was the 'trailing spouse' on an international job relocation before I became a mother so why do I find my current job ie. SAHM, more frustrating, ungratifying, and repetitvely dull with very little feedback and insane work hours? I know women who revel in exactly the same conditions. Am I missing something? or why do I yearn for something more?

I'm still searching for the answers. So far I know that I am missing the measure of security that financial independance brings. I truly miss interacting with others in a working environment outside the home. I am finding it very difficult dealing with the loss of identity that being the unsalaried spouse who stays at home entails. It's very difficult to stay confident in one's abilities when there is no feedback from the mounds of laundry, the dusting, housework, cooking, grocery shopping, continual discipline issues and child wrangling that comprise a normal Day In The Life. Like a lot of modern day older mums, I've experienced the career path and been in charge of my own bank account. Having a child was a very conscious decision, its ramifications as fully explored as a childless person could and I'm still not regretting it one bit.

But, to paraphrase Monty Python, nobody expected the complete loss of self that comes with staying at home to look after your family.

At the beginning of the week I got an email telling me that my self portrait has been chosen for inclusion in the We Feel Fine book. I'm thrilled to be noticed, but as you can see from the accompanying blog entry, nothing has really changed in my life in the last 18 months! Add this to a couple of major let-downs plus a chronically ongoing disappointment and you can see why I'm currently at a "Is this all there is?" moment!

currently out on display ...

slideshow: items on display at City Hall

So this afternoon's activity was setting up the display case at City Hall in Port Moody where Sandra and I, from the Blackberry Artists Cooperative, are exhibiting our wares for the month of June.

Sandra has the most deliciously gorgeous beaded pieces of jewelry ever and it's quite an honour to be 'on show' beside her. I've set up six cases comprising wire crochet, wire and fibre, cufflinks and metalwork so hopefully there will be something of interest for anyone passing by.

The slideshow above shows most of the pieces currently out on display, and the ByHand spotlight below shows where you can get your hands on similar pieces or custom makes for yourself! Just click on the image to be taken to the item's selling page.
