My Top Ten Films of the Decade- #9 Drag Me To Hell

And no, I’m not kidding.

I have to start by saying I do not generally like horror movies. Which is why I was completely surprised to find myself loving this one (*Disclaimer* If you are of the faint of heart variety, I suggest you give this film a miss as it is rather scary. If you can handle a little thrill every now and then, however, do read on).

Sam Raimi’s 2009 horror flick, Drag Me to Hell starring Alison Lohman was one of the most thrilling cinematic experiences I’ve had in a long time. It was scary, funny and camp all rolled into one.

Lohman plays Christine Brown, a bright-eyed Los Angeles loan officer. She doesn’t want much in life- just a promotion at her job, a happy future with her boyfriend (future husband hopefully!) and a shot of happiness- just like the rest of us. But when she turns down an extension on a loan to a mysterious (and scary looking) Mrs. Ganush (played by Lorna Raver) a curse is placed upon her and all hell breaks loose. This movie frightened me, made me laugh out loud on several occasions and thrilled me with its twists and turns… Overall a rollicking good time- and very apropos for this Halloween weekend don't you think?

I do hope you'll stay tuned for my number 8 pick...

Dinner Parties- Comme les Français- Famille Chic

Ahh, the French dinner party. That intimate affair: the subtle interactions, the amazing food (the wine!), the ritual. If you have an opportunity to attend an authentic French dinner party- go, I tell you, allez!

Famille Chic threw at least one dinner party a week. This still amazes me. In America, dinner parties are a rarity (So many diets to take into account. So many allergies. So many picky eaters!). Staying in France really made me appreciate the art of a dinner party. It is, in my opinion, the most intimate type of party one can have.

The format for Famille Chic’s dinner parties were very formal. We would always dress up (no jeans, s'il vous plaît) - the men would wear jackets and ties (or for the most casual of dinner parties- a sweater with a collared shirt). Madame Chic would wear a skirt (but then again- she always wore skirts. I never saw her in trousers- even on the coldest of days). We would all sit in the salon for a little aperitif beforehand. The aperitif would range anywhere from a kir to whiskey to tomato juice. (I am quite a lightweight so when we had whiskey as an aperitif- it really became a party for me!)

Classical music would ooze from the record player. After the aperitif we would all move to the table. Madame Chic would disappear to the kitchen (how on earth she managed to create 3-5 delicious courses, mingle with her guests and not be a slave to the stove was beyond me) where she would roll out the tray containing the first course (the kitchen was not adjacent to the dining room, remember). The first course would often be composed of a soup, savory tart, salad or delicate slices of cured meats. The women would always be served first starting with the female guest of honor, then me, then Madame Chic (on non dinner party evenings, I was always served first- without exception), then the men served themselves last. It was like this for every course. At first all this etiquette following and pomp and circumstance felt very daunting to me (I come from the land of outdoor BBQs remember) but I grew to love this following of tradition and always feel slightly disappointed when the protocol isn’t followed aux États-Unis .

After the starter, Madame Chic would disappear into the kitchen again and roll out the main course on the trolley. This could range anywhere from lamb, to fish to roast chicken- and was always served with fresh vegetables and usually a gratin of some sort. And then the same thing would happen with the dessert- either a selection of delectable cheeses eaten with bread or a homemade apple or strawberry tart, a cake, crepes or fruit drenched in Grand Marnier.

**Sigh** I am getting depressed just writing this. I miss those dinner parties so much. I loved their formality- the ceremony involved- the pomp (the circumstance!) The different courses- the different wines. I long for that here in California… I suppose the only way to stave off my culinary depression is to throw a little dinner party of my own comme les Français . Now all I need is a little bit of courage…

Rose Water Facial Masque Mature, Combo To Dry Skin

I decided to finish out the week with another favorite facial masque recipe of mine, not only for what it offers dry and combination skin types, but oh my gosh, the fragrance is truly intoxicating. This masque recipe should be in everyone's skincare regimen.

I love Rose Water Distillate, Rose Oil, Rose Petals, Essential Oil of Rose Absolute (very expensive) anything Rose I can get my hands on. It takes me back to an era of when I spent every weekend as a child with my Gran in the city across the bay...yes...that is right....good ole San Francisco.

Everything she possessed in her creams and toilette waters had Rose or Lavender as the main fragrances. Her bedroom and kitchen always had faint hints of the subtleties of Rose Petals. She used it in cooking and to boost her wonderful walnut tangerine chicken salad....it made this delicacy very fragrant to the pallet and the senses.

The Rose signifies romance, beauty, youth, love and well being. Their fragrance brings calm, balance, relieves stress and creates a relaxing ambiance.

This is why I made sure my Vitamin Rich Facial Serum, our premium skincare product, and my favorite also, was made with the first ingredient being from pure Rose Distillate. It is also our second ingredient in Perfect Balance Facial Toner for a very subtle hint of Roses. My day is not complete until I get my Rose fix in the morning when I apply my serum to my face. I savor the lovely fragrance while it lasts. It dissipates within a few minutes though, but the moisturizing quality of Rose which remains on the skin is so beneficial to mature skin and all other skin types, and provides soothing comfort for irritated or sensitive skin types.

And for those who are familiar with my mineral makeup products, it is clear I am in LOVE with the Rose....hence my names honoring the Rose... Rose Petal Foundation, Rose Bloom Eye Color, Rosebud Blush. Then of course there is the foundation formulas...Delicate Rose Petal, Dewy Rose Petal, and Velvet Rose Petal. ;~)

This is why I love this masque...I hope you do to! Indulge your senses 1-3 times per week....your preference!

Rose Water Facial Masque Recipe

Ingredients needed:

Rose Water ( pure, no preservatives and not made with Rose Oil and Water, only steam distilled)
Natural Unflavored Yogurt
Organic Honey

You can locate these at your local health food stores, food coops or some vitamin shops. Just be sure to read the ingredients of your Rose Water. If it is not pure do not purchase it. You want it to be USDA Certified and food grade quality. The place I located the best Pure Distilled Rose Water is from Alteya Organics. 100% Pure! It runs between $7.85 - $23.95 depending on size of purchase.

Let's Formulate A Fragrant Masque

Keeping It Simple....In small bowl mix:

2 Tbs Rose Water (keep your bottle refrigerated to preserve freshness) Do not warm!
1 Tbs Natural Yogurt (room temperature or warm slightly in microwave before adding to Rose Water)
1 Tbs Organic Honey (warm in microwave first to make it runny then add to masque mixture)

Optional Fun:

6 Fresh Rose Petals (available depending on time of year or go to Costco for an inexpensive Bouquet)

If you use the live Rose Petals, soak them in water 15 - 30 minutes then crush them up in the bottom of the bowl for a truly fragrant release of their natural oils.

Now add your Rose Water, warm Yogurt and warmed Honey. The Rose water will warm up from the Yogurt and Honey.
Mix really well and apply to a freshly cleansed face and neck.
Relax and enjoy the mild aroma of a rose garden and bask in its' essence for 20 - 30 minutes.

Rinse off with warm water or remove with a steamed in the microwave wet washcloth...(be careful...may be HOT!)

For the handcraft lover and experimenter, if you ever want to make your own Rose Water, here is an article I located on how to do precisely that. Rose Water Distillation Enjoy!

Now apply your Perfect Balance Facial Toner and your Vitamin Rich Facial Serum to finalize this luxurious Spa Treatment. Voila! Ahhh.....You smell so good and your skin feels like a velvet Rose Petal!

Ingredient Benefits

Rose Water ~ It stimulates the skin encouraging blood flow. It is great for controlling and balancing sebum, making it beneficial for both dry and oily skin. It can balance and restore the skin's pH and helps tighten pores. Its antibacterial properties help fight acne creating a gentle environment for healing without harshness. It is reputed to be useful in the treatment of all sorts of dermatitis.

Yogurt ~ The lactic acid in yogurt soothes, softens and tightens the skin and refines the pores. It reduces wrinkles and hydrates dry areas. Its high nutrient content and natural antibacterial and anti-fungal properties also get rid of germs and other bacteria.

Warning: this a lactic acid (natural AHA and dairy) so if you react to these typically due to allergic reactions when consuming dairy then you may have a skin reaction with topical application...do patch test!

Honey ~ It is the sweet material taken from the nectar of flowers and manufactured by bees. Used since Egyptian times for medicinal and cosmetic purposes. It is full of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and enzymes. Has an emollient property, is soothing and is a natural humectant. This helps to smooth roughness and calm irritations of the skin. It has natural cleansing and antibacterial properties and since bacteria are unable to live in honey, it demonstrates its natural preservative capabilities. This perfect emollient leaves a micro thin protective film on the skin.

I hope you enjoy this wonderful masque as much as I've enjoyed sharing it with you.

Keep the munchkins safe this Halloween. Since it is on a Saturday this year, I expect you will see them out in their ghoulish costumes well after dark. Little kids in costume are the cutest!

Have a great weekend and let me know how this recipe does for you.

My Top Ten Films of the Decade- #10 Intimate Strangers

I can hardly believe the decade is almost over. The past ten years have produced some amazing films and I have decided to celebrate by counting down my ten favorite films of the past decade, connoisseur style. We start with number 10…

Intimate Strangers
, or Confidences Trop Intime, is a French film released in 2004 starring Fabrice Luchini and Sandrine Bonnaire. It is the story of a woman named Anna (Bonnaire) who one day walks into the office of William (Luchini). William is an introverted tax attorney, bored with his life- frustrated. His world changes when Anna mistakes his office (and him) for that of her new psychologist. William wants to tell Anna that she is in the wrong office, but he is so intrigued by her- so beguiled that he allows her to talk and unfold her darkest secrets… and thus, the games begin...

What unfolds is a tale of erotic subtlety- one that explores the longings of the imagination and the heart. This movie is not overt in any sense of the word- its subtlety is rapturous and leaves the audience with a sense of passion and a longing for more...

I hope you'll stay tuned for my number 9 pick...

Culture- Comme les Français- Le Théâtre

In my ongoing effort to support the arts and keep myself culturally active, I have been upping my game by attending more films, museums, art galleries, and live theatre. There is a certain feeling that I get when I take part in any of the aforementioned activities. Each occasion allows for a certain specialness- dressing for the occasion, socializing with close friends (or spending some quality alone time) and being fully in the present moment- immersing myself in the art at hand.

Going to the theatre is one of my absolute favorite activities. Theatre is one of the subjects I studied at University and I hold a soft spot of appreciation for it in my heart. There is a lot of great independent theatre in Los Angeles and over the past three weeks I have taken full advantage. I attended: Mother at the Imagined Life Theatre, The Dig at The Doheny Memorial Library of U.S.C., Ruby, Tragically Rotund at the Los Angeles Theatre Center and Meadowmount- an original one act play at the SIPA Performance Space.

The plays were each original pieces- unique in their own right. Their topics ranged from: mother-daughter relationships, to a Jewish archaeologist looking for love, to an overweight Filipino beauty queen seeking acceptance, to a true story of murder, sexuality and intrigue in the military.

While the subjects were largely diverse there was one common denominator at each performance- the audience. That special gathering of people, the excited murmur amongst friends before the curtain goes up, the hushed delight shared when a sacred moment is explored on stage, the joy of shared laughter and the special experience of being moved- even if just a little- by the collaborative effort of everyone involved.

Such, for me, is the specialness of the theatre…

Have you seen any good plays lately?

A Room With a View

This is the view from our dining room table. The month of October is particularly special at my house because the large tree out front produces these gorgeous pink flowers.
If I am ever feeling less than grateful, I sit at my dining room table and take in this magical tree with its thorny trunk and pink blooms and reflect about how truly lucky I am to live in Santa Monica and have a room with a view…

Color- Comme les Français

One brisk Monday morning in Paris I was running errands with Madame Chic. We were on our way to pick up a few fresh items for that evening’s meal. Madame Chic and I spent a lot of time together. I would help her with the cooking (she always refused my help but I insisted! I wanted to learn to cook comme les Français). We talked a lot and my French was slowly getting better. Our relationship was lovely, but still very formal.

So I was shocked when that morning she told me rather bluntly. “That sweater does not look good on you.”

I looked down at my spring green twinset from Banana Republic. It had been a gift from someone back home (Who? I can’t remember). “Really?” I had asked, “But it’s silk/ cashmere blend!”

“No it’s not the quality that disturbs me,” Madame Chic said, eyeing my sweater with concern, “It’s the color. It doesn’t suit you at all. It washes you out. You look sallow.”

Great. I looked sallow. The sensitive American in me was shocked that Madame Chic had been so blunt with me. In America we tell each other we look good no matter what. And if someone looks really bad? We usually just don’t say anything at all. Mon Dieu, I must have looked horrible if Madame Chic actually told me so!

She could see the crestfallen look that overtook my face. “Don’t be upset!” she said, “It’s just an observation. As a woman you must know what colors look the best on you and how are you to know if no one tells you?”

This was true.

I asked her tentatively, “What colors do you think I would look good in? Not green obviously.”

“Pas du tout!” she exclaimed, “You would look ravishing in emerald green, in deep aubergine, royal blue, ruby red… black, bien sûr.” She advised that I stay away from yellow and spring green. I went home and looked in the mirror with new eyes. Dear God she was right. The color had washed me out. I think I instinctively knew this but because I received the twinset as a gift- I just wore it without questioning whether or not it worked for me.

“French women pay very close attention to what enhances their beauty and what doesn’t enhance their beauty,” Madame Chic had said.

This turned out to be a lesson I would never forget.

I would love to know… what colors work best for you?

Sterling Minerals Company News and Updates

Hello Everyone,

I sincerely hope you are enjoying our cooler weather combined with our Autumn colors that are literally bursting on every sidewalk, outside every home, leaving rivers of fallen leaves on stoops and in gutters.

I really wanted the warm weather to stick around longer but as the season changes with such exquisite displays of reds, burgundy's and golds, it is hard to not be swept up in the wonder of change. Halloween is just a little over a week away and my neighborhood is being transformed into spooky displays of black cats and splashes of orange. I hear excited children getting ready to go trick or treating. It's really difficult to ignore the fun and cheer the Fall season brings. Although orange is not my favorite color, it seems so fitting and a color that I actually do fall in love with at this time of year.

Spiced cider is the beverage of choice for me right now, sipping it in front of a fire with the one you love (my hubby), watching the last of our leaves turn color and float from their summer home coming to nestle in our winterized waterfall creating a cascade of color where there was once flowing water. Ah, c'est la vie...until next year. Anyhoo....

Just wanted to bring you up to date on the latest happenings at my company in case you have missed it.

The body cream testing is going very well and the scents we offer are pretty much split down the middle in terms of preference. No one scent is out leading the other. So it looks like I am going to bring both into the company and I am actually working on having them ready to go before the holidays. These will make great Christmas gifts for someone you love or to treat yourself to their luscious moisture and tantalizing aroma therapy.

So remember to ask for your sample when you order any full size mineral powders or ONATI Skin Care products.

Check Out Our Poll

I have added a poll to the right hand sidebar in my skincare guide just below the email sign up. This is a way for those who have yet to order, but could share their preference with us, can still participate by logging their vote. This is anonymous and only takes a click of the button. Click Here to participate.

I have also decided that even with the earlier release of the body cream, I will continue to provide free samples as I promised, through the holidays with your purchase as stated above. For further details go Here. Or watch our video below followed by Clicking Here to view the More Info under my photo on the right for ingredient details or for those who cannot view this in this article due to RSS feeds and Emails. Please remember, with the free sample, I am requesting the favor of feedback from any of you that ask and would appreciate your opinion.

More Videos Are Also Posted

I have also recently added a Review of Loreal's Extra Volume Collagen Mascara.

I love this mascara and it leaves my lashes well coated without clumping and it leaves them so soft. However, just to point out.....the Collagen does absolutely nothing for our lashes and don't know why it is in this formula except for marketing. Lashes are dead hair so any ingredient listed will not be absorbed or utilized by the lashes in any way shape or form...they will coat them nicely, hence the name mascara. ;~)

Nonetheless, I do enjoy this product very much. You can View it by Clicking Here or watch it below.

My Fall Color Tutorial for changing my colors is also up and I am planning to produce more of these to demonstrate our color pallets. Just realize that in the videos there can be some bleeding effect due to the lighting in my bathroom. But I will do my best to represent the colors as best as I can. Click Here to view or watch below. Of course no photography whether on the website or viewed in a video will do these colors justice. And remember you can request your FREE trial shades when you place a full size purchase which is detailed Here.

A Big Shout Out

Thanks to all those that have already participated in the free trial of skin cream and your feed back has been great.

I also want to thank those that have joined the Sterling Minerals Family from abroad. Our International Customers are growing everyday with our largest base coming from Australia (mainly New South Wales), Singapore, the UK and Canada. Our most recent additions to reaching out overseas are our Scandinavian neighbors.... Norway, Sweden and Denmark. We have enjoyed New Zealand, the Netherlands and France joining us as well.

I very much appreciate everyone who has fallen in love with our mineral makeup and skin care products and for those whom have reached out so far from home to give us your business. Thank You Again!

And to point out for those that are thinking about purchasing from us overseas please see our Shipping Rates now being offered to International Customers for reduced fees. Click Here for information.

Well that's the news....and I wish everyone a happy weekend. Stay Warm and get outside and smell the fresh brisk air...and maybe take a roll in a pile of your neighbors leaves...I mean isn't that what they are there for anyway?

Cheers!

Interiors, Comme les Français- Madame Bohemienne

Madame Bohemienne was a single mother with two boys (one teenager, the other early twenties) that lived at home. She was such a marvelous woman- warm and welcoming. She frequently invited me over to her home... and her home was lovely.

Madame Bohemienne’s apartment was on the 10th floor (I have already described my journey in getting to the 10th floor sans elevator here) and while her apartment was very different to Madame Chic’s (no ancient antiques or portraits of formidable ancestors to speak of), Madame Bohemienne’s home was equally as inviting and uniquely Parisian.

When I first met Madame Bohemienne she asked me what I thought about the walls of her living room. I had noticed them as soon as I walked in. To say they were yellow would be an understatement. They were bright yellow. Strong yellow. Parisian yellow. When I gave her my opinion, I spoke the truth “I absolutely love them,” I said. Madame Bohemienne’s walls spoke volumes about the way she led her life. They were bold, creative, stimulating- these were not tranquil walls- these walls made you think and they would (as I would find out soon enough) be walls to host countless animated dinner parties. They were walls for living in.

Yellow wasn’t the only bold color in Madame Bohemienne’s living room, however. Her curtains were a deep red as was the cover on the built-in seating arrangement; not quite a sofa, not quite a bench… it was an l-shaped built in- covered with bold Moroccan-inspired cushions- perfect for before dinner socializing.

There was, of course, a very large dining table (a pre-requisite, I think for true Parisian living), lots of books and a very tiny television (another pre-requisite, I believe). Her kitchen was a modern one- modern appliances, new fixtures and it was painted bright blue- Madame Bohemienne, as you can probably already tell, was not afraid of color.

Her apartment vibrated with great energy. Some of my favorite memories of my time in Paris are from attending her wild dinner parties (more on those later). But one moment I will never forget happened late in Spring- Madame Bohemienne had just popped out to grab a bouquet of flowers for her dinner party that night. She walked in breathless (no elevator, remember) and placed her flowers down, walked to her open French windows and proclaimed, “We are so lucky to live in Paris. This is truly the most beautiful place in the world”.

I couldn’t agree more.

Luis Meléndez- Still Life and Little Luxuries

Today, in my ongoing effort to keep myself culturally aware, I visited the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to see the Luis Meléndez Still Life exhibit. I dressed for the occasion (taupe peasant skirt, striped shirt, ballet flats, wayfarers and messenger bag- perfect for for the museum) and journeyed to LACMA by myself for an afternoon of indulgence in art.

My art history knowledge is pretty abundant when it comes to French artists (thanks to my stay in Paris), as well as for religious art (thanks to Art History 101 at USC... Virgin and Child with Saints, anyone??) so I knew little about the Spanish painter Luis Meléndez (pictured above in his self portrait) going into today's excursion. I am so glad I went- they didn't call Mr. Meléndez the 'master of Spanish still life' for nothing.

His art was so vivid, so impeccably realistic I almost felt like I was looking at photographs. Meléndez painted everything from fish to figs, melons to grapes and the bread... let's just say I was longing for some tapas after the museum...

My favorite painting of his was the Still Life with Chocolate Service, Bread Roll and Biscuits (pictured above) painted in 1770. At the time, chocolate was a novelty from Central America and the Spanish upper class was obsessed with drinking it in the form of hot chocolate. I love the idea of chocolate as an exotic and coveted item- 1770's own version of a little luxury.

Sadly, like so many other artists, Luis Meléndez did not receive the acclaim he deserved in his lifetime and died a poor man in 1780. But his artistic genius is greatly appreciated today... and rightfully so.

The Luis Meléndez exhibit runs at LACMA through January 3, 2010.

Oxygenating Skin Creams - Do They Really Work?

Oh my...where do I begin. I find it very difficult to write this article and keep a straight face...laughter is overrunning my emotions mixed with undying skepticism and disdain.

I just watched the other night with my husband, the HSN channel and they were featuring a skin care line with the featured product of the night called Signature Club A by Adrienne (Arpel) Inflatable Wrinkle Penetrating A + Oxygen Foam Fill Moisturizer. The floating tapestry that was being woven out of hype and claims during this hour of entertainment television had my husband and I rolling in our seats with laughter one moment, followed by us shouting at the TV with rebuttal the next, not that they could hear us, but it made us feel better nonetheless.

Description From The HSN Website For This Potion

Face the world beautifully each and every day with help from the Signature Club A Inflatable Wrinkle Penetrating A + Oxygen Foam Fill Moisturizer. This lightweight foam shoots potent wrinkle-smoothing ingredients through multiples layers of your skin, helping to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and boosting moisture. You receive a 1.8 oz. aerosol can.

Signature Club A Inflatable Wrinkle Penetrating A + Oxygen Foam Fill Moisturizer Features:

  • Formula gives skin a notable, rapid increase in volume.
  • Visibly smoothes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Formulated with retinol, a pure form of Vitamin A.
  • Contains ingredients that oxygenate the skin's surface.
  • Helps give skin a brighter, more youthful appearance.
  • With continued use, you can maintain maximum beauty benefits and help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, laugh and frown lines, expression lines, uneven skin tone, increase skin brightness.
  • Made in USA.
About The New Hyaluronic Filling Technology:
  • Comes in the form of dehydrated sponge-like hyaluronic acid flakes.
  • The dehydrating process causes them to collapse, making them completely flat. When they come in contact with moisture, they begin to swell, plumping up and filling in the appearance of wrinkles and helping skin retain moisture, even in dry climates.
  • These spheres can swell up to 30 times larger than the dehydrated size.
Much of what you read here is only in part what and how this skincare product was outlandishly demonstrated. Adrienne would put the solution on her hand and indeed it would begin to fizzle and bubble away....truly spectacular. Then she applied it to the skin on the model and it did the same exact thing....imagine that!

She also demonstrated repeatedly how this process works by inserting a dry sponge into a bowl of water and we were then all mesmerized and breathless I am sure, observing the miraculous swelling of the sponge as sponges do, as it soaked up the water while she continued to equate this with....paraphrasing here, "this is what is happening to your skin when you use this moisturizer. It will plump up like a sponge as the oxygen infused cream goes deep into the skin cells through this incredible oxygenating process. See how the sponge is swelling and lifting out of the solution? Look at this....this is fantastic...This is your skin performing in the same way.... It penetrates deeply, smoothing out all of those fine lines and wrinkles." (inject rolling laughter here)

She then moves back to the model and demonstrates once again with the magical potion on her face as she continues to describe how the bubbles lift the surface of the skin...."see all this bubbling, that is how it plumps your skin...it gets in there and lifts and fills in those lines," she exclaimed. (giggle)

We were very thoroughly entertained at this ingenious marketing strategy and though we could see through the smoke and mirrors of this demonstration...We gave her props for truly bringing laughter into our household and giving a shot to the old immune system through that laughter.

Again, just another skin care product backed by celebrity recognition.

These ingredients are truly unremarkable!

Inflatable Wrinkle Penetrating A + Oxygen Foam Fill Moisturizer Ingredients: Water, Butane, Cetearyl Alcohol, Ceteareth-20, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Propylene Glycol, Isopropyl Palmitate, Glycerin, Propane, Pentylene Glycol, Hydroxypropyl Starch Phosphate, Dimethicone, Gynostemma Pentaphyllum Extract, Panax Ginseng Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Fragrance, Sodium Hyaluronate, Phospholipids, Retinol and Stearyl Alcohol.

Some of the reviews for this product on HSN website were less than favorable and many complained of severe burning and tingling...now this is no laughing matter and one that I feel is important to address. Others seem to like the product, however, no one reported it doing anything really for the wrinkles. You can take a peek at some of these reviews at the link I posted above at the HSN website headliner.

Let's Examine The Facts Shall We....

The Foaming Component: This product is not oxygenating the skin at all, let alone shooting anything into the skin (sounds painful).....what is occurring is the reaction of 3 ingredients in this formula being forced out under pressure with the Butane and Propane which is key in producing foaming skin care products. Without a product being dispensed under pressure, foaming would not occur.

Three Components Also Known As Surfactants (foaming agent)

Cetearyl Alcohol
Ceteareth-20
Hydroxypropyl Starch Phosphate

Other Ingredients: All basic and many I have written about in the past, provide slip and humectant properties like Olive Oil, silicones, propylene glycol, and glycerin, but one key ingredient I want to notate especially is Pentylene Glycol. This ingredient has been linked to contact dermatitis and being a skin irritant.

One woman on HSN review page claimed it must have been the Retinol that caused the burning of her face, but this is doubtful based on its' location on the ingredient list. It is probably less than .05% of total emulsion. Her reaction along with others is more than likely related to the use of the butane and propane since they are reported as in liquid state or the cold vapor from them can cause a frost bite effect or burning sensation when brought in contact with skin.

If the product expelled non-vaporized liquid propellant mixed with the emulsion or the propellant was not allowed to completely vaporize before applying, the reaction would be critical to skin reacting so badly. However, complete vaporization of the butane and propane then defeats the purpose of getting that foam on your face before it stops reacting to the atmospheric pressure for the so-called plumping effect, because then you would basically wind up with a runny liquid in your hands.

I am simply amazed at how many of us today are still drawn in by a remedy that pretends to perform magic on national television!

The Foam System At Work

Foam Aerosols which often are classified separately, consists of three phase systems in which the liquid propellant which normally does not exceed 10-15% by weight is emulsified with other ingredients. When the valve is depressed, the emulsion is forced through the nozzle and in the presence of warm air and atmospheric pressure, the entrapped liquid propellant reverts to a vapor and whips the emulsion into a frothy foam. *Ref 1*

As the foam sits on the hand the atmospheric pressure begins to collapse the foam, and this is why you see bubbling of the product, not oxygenation. Propellants are used in skin care, shave creams, hair care, whipped creams, and some require shaking before use to begin the foaming process by keeping a correct balance between the ingredients and the propellant for proper dispersion. Some systems lose their foaming quality as the gas may leak from the canister or an imbalance of propellant to emulsion has occurred with consecutive use....This was a complaint of another user on the review board.

I could go on as to the science and technology of different types of foam systems, but I won't bother you further with the boring details. Let's just say there are other dispensing mechanisms, such as pumps that are safer and less lethal to use than propane and butane. As delicate as skin tissue is, I don't understand creating a product which uses two ingredients that are considered highly flammable especially since the foaming action is a total gimmick. Think Hairspray + Match = blowtorch.

Dissecting The Sponge Demonstration

Now do I really need to state our skin is not a sponge?
So why do they demonstrate on a sponge?

To tantalize.... No amount of foaming ingredient is going to go from underneath and push our skin up and smooth it to perfection! Plus our skin cells don't plump like sponge cells since sponges are designed to grab and hold moisture and our skin retains moisture through naturally occurring sebum and moisturizers containing humectants which attract moisture to the skins' surface. Loss of collagen is what draws our faces in and creates saggy areas on the face, not loss of moisture. Dry skin simply enhances the appearance of these flaws and moisturizers work to reduce this along with some prevention for further damage.

Moisturizing is key to keeping our fine lines smoothed and softened and to help further prevent deeper creases on our skin from getting worse. Certain skin care ingredients are reputed for their holistic and healing properties and are how they provide improvement simply by keeping dry skin at bay through infusion of additional hydrating emollients, perform collagen stimulation, and fighting sun damage and free radicals found in our environment. Plus a moisturized skin naturally looks plumper due to fine lines being softened.

Water will do the same thing....just spend an hour in the tub and then look at the wrinkly skin...It certainly isn't plumped is it? I mean think about this for a minute, if our skin could absorb water like a sponge, we would have the weight of a water soaked sponge until we were wrung out. We could never take a bath, shower or get caught out in the rain. Our skin is designed to shed water and create a barrier to protect our bodies.

Moisturizers also provide a protective barrier so they are essential to help sustain moisture in the skin and then soothing the skins' surface with other key ingredients for healing and repair. Skin creams are always best used on freshly washed, moist skin for optimum results.

During the HSN demonstration we are actually witnessing the foam destabilizing due to contact with the atmosphere, not a plumping or foaming bubble that goes deep into our tissues to swell or lift the skins' surface. This is equivalent to those cream manufacturers who tout that they can replace our collagen with synthetic collagen spheres infused into our skin....uh sorry but that isn't going to happen either...for one thing they are too large to penetrate the dermis layer.

Natural collagen can only be stimulated, not replaced since our body can absorb and breaks down some ingredients we apply and those we consume over time. Yet the majority of skincare ingredients remain unchanged, and on the skins' surface. The delivery process of many ingredients cannot go much beyond surface treatment for a younger looking skin.

Vitamin C....Niacinimide....Alpha Lipoic Acid....DMAE....CoEnzyme Q10....Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A)....Sodium Hyaluronate.

These are all great ingredients to help stimulate collagen, assist with skin cell renewal and help attract and retain moisture to the skin, whereby promoting a firmer skin tone...none of which were in this formula except for the two which are noted after fragrance.... Just some nice skin softeners...pretty basic.

A great article I located written by a Dermatologist Dr. Benabio is one for a great read and for debunking further oxygenating claims on skin care products. His style of writing was also enjoyable to read since he injected humor to this beauty industry tale. You gotta love it!
Oxygen Facials: A Lot Of Hot Air!

The Hyaluronic Filling System

This process is derived from Sodium Hyaluronate (don't see Flakes on list) which is clear down at the bottom of the ingredient list along with Retinol and will be in such insignificant amounts, they will do nothing for the skin.

What is actually occurring here is the use of Dimethicone from the silicone family, as a temporary line filler found in many cosmetic products. Provides silken texture and wonderful slip. This is another reason we use Methicone in our mineral makeup formulas aside from reducing skin irritation with Mica, but to give soft focus and to provide smoothness and reduce visible signs of aging on the skin temporarily by filling in the lines on our faces. Mineral makeup also keeps it on the skin topically and not absorbed so it does not become occlusive like silicone oils in liquid makeup and skin creams.

Another reviewer, age 65, stated that she recognized that it worked well at reducing her lines on her face until she washed it off. An example of no lasting effect, but felt nice on the skin.

Rule Of Thumb: Anything pretty much past Fragrance on the label is for purely marketing aesthetics only.

Last But Not Least...Oxygen For The Skin

Now let's look at this from a standpoint of this statement being a contradiction in terms.

Number one: our skin is not aerobic, bacteria in acne is anaerobic......this is why we get pimples. Oxygenation of the skin only occurs in its real form through the use of peroxides.

For instance;

When you apply 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide to a cut or open pimple, you will note foaming occurs. Apply it to unbroken skin and nothing happens.....it is like applying water to the face.

What causes the foaming action to occur is Catalase, which is a common enzyme found in nearly all living organisms which are exposed to oxygen, where it functions to catalyze the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen. Catalase has one of the highest turnover numbers of all enzymes; one molecule of catalase can convert millions of molecules of hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen per second. *Ref 2*

Whereby Hydrogen Peroxide creates pressure within the pimple through oxygenation, killing the acne causing bacteria which cannot survive in oxygen. In fact some state that this is such a powerful oxidizer it is considered a highly reactive oxygen species. This is why some have a concern for the release of free radicals when oxygen is created in or under the skin.

Personally I love to use Hydrogen Peroxide for that tiny zit coming through, but I never use it as an everyday antiseptic or astringent on my face. And at 3% solution to water, there is little concern for long lasting effects taking place since decomposition is immediate, no systemic effect. I also find this far safer than benzoyl peroxide solutions.

However, this does bring me to my next point about Free Radicals released through oxygen.

Free Radical Damage and Oxygen

Since science dictates, and there has been plenty written on this subject about what occurs to our skin when we are exposed to pollutants and the suns' harmful rays in our atmosphere on a daily basis.....and the ongoing release of free radical damage within our bodies and on our skin...wouldn't it stand to reason that if this product were really providing oxygenation to our faces then we are actually accelerating the aging process?

If you think about this marketing claim it really is contradictory. Many vitamin supplement and skin care companies including mine, have painstakingly formulated emulsions and vitamin packs loaded with antioxidants (emphasis on "anti") to fight oxygen based free radical damage caused by the daily stresses our skin and bodies are exposed to, which is the air we breathe.

Our cells are constantly rebuilding and restoring themselves and through the help of antioxidants we are hopefully staving off cancer, disease, infection and aging of our tissues.

It is personally more important to me to have my skin care products be as clean and natural as I can formulate them keeping skin both healthy and young looking.

Oxygenation of creams....well I think you get the gist...BOGUS and HYPE!

Enjoy your weekend...and remember, we are all beautiful...no matter the age....so remember to....

On Posture (again)

Yesterday morning I was making breakfast for myself- chopping strawberries and bananas into a bowl- making a cup of green tea (I was having a healthy day) and I noticed with some chagrin, that while I was chopping the strawberries my shoulders were hunched in a very non-attractive manner.

I straightened up instantly.

Throughout the rest of my day I was acutely aware of my posture- in front of the computer (horrendous), at work (leaning against walls and objects to avoid standing straight), at dinner (elbows off the table!). When did my posture get so bad? I visited this very question on my blog about a year ago (see here). After that post I vowed to constantly have good posture. That didn’t last long.

I am finding a correlation with walking around ‘unconscious’ and having bad posture. I am a dreamer and tend to live a lot in my imagination and whimsy… meanwhile life is carrying on around me and I am going through it like the Hunchback of Notre Dame! (Okay, it’s not that bad but it might as well be… bad posture is a sin in my book).

This got me thinking about how I can straighten up and have more poise. Stop daydreaming? Live more in the present moment? Breathe deeper? Probably a combination of all three. This goes back to everything I've been exploring over the past few months... eating mindfully, being present, living with passion... (I can imagine it would be hard to live passionately with hunched shoulders- the two simply do not go together).

I’m glad I’m revisiting this subject again because I would like to know about your posture… how has it been lately?

Seurat's Un dimanche après-midi à l'Île de la Grande Jatte is shown above. His subjects show impeccable posture. Something to aspire to perhaps?

OK, not bog soup but a soupy hint nonetheless.

Hands up who ends up with leftover roasted veggies from the sunday dinner? What happens to them?
Am I guessing garbage?
Well, no more! SImply liquidise/blend the leftovers with some stock and voila! roasted veg soup ..... in an instant.
Mmmmm.

Meh! We 'did' the pumpkin patch yesterday, finished off the Thanksgiving dinner so I guess today it's time to get with it for Halloween.

I'm planning some nice gothic pieces in black wire for autumn/winter anyway but these polymer clay eyeballs (from valeriebeads) just screamed "use me!" from my bead box.

so i did!

Makeup- Comme les Français

Madame Bohemienne had it… Madame Chic had it… practically every French woman I observed in Paris had it! “It” being what is commonly referred to by Francophiles as “le no make-up look”.

Do you know which look I am talking about? It’s the look that says, “yes my cheeks are flushed, my lips pouty, my skin tone flawless and my lashes ready to bat but I didn’t lift a finger to get this look. This look is au natural- it’s just me! I have better things to do with my time than spend an hour in front of the mirror every morning applying makeup. I go to art galleries! Read Proust! Embrace my lover by the Seine!" (Okay, this scenario is getting a little out of hand but you do get my point, don’t you?)

The truth is, most French women do wear makeup every day- they just look like they aren’t wearing any. The look is polished and pretty- a slight definition of the eyes, an accentuated lip... I have been embracing this look during the day for quite some time now (thanks to Carmindy for teaching me the 5-Minute Face!). But when I was living in France- I actually (horreur) didn’t wear any makeup. Yes, you heard me right. I was a fresh-faced bohemian college student- an idealist- a dreamer! I didn’t have time for blush and lipstick and other such mindless pursuits!

That is until I dropped my preconceived notions about what it means to be a well-rounded woman and realized that doing things like reading Proust and visiting museums is a lot more fun if you look good! Now every morning I spend five to ten minutes applying powder, blush, lip gloss and mascara (oh, and eyeliner…. I can’t live without it). It is a minimal look- my version of le no makeup look.

Madame Chic would be so proud…

Little Luxuries- NARS Eyeshadow in Corfu

Anyone familiar with The Daily Connoisseur knows how much I adore Chanel Eyeshadow Quads. I love their colors, textures- the richness of the pigments. I still love my Chanel but I have found a new little luxury in NARS cream eyeshadow in the shade Corfu.

Corfu is a shimmery, creamy taupe that I would imagine would be flattering on any woman. The color is buildable - one application is perfect for a pretty day face- two or more applications and you have a shimmery smokey eye for a sultry evening out. I do recommend using an eyeshadow primer beneath as this is a cream eyeshadow and can tend to crease (I like Urban Decay Primer Potion). What I love most about NARS Corfu is that you can apply it with your fingertips for easy glamour.

NARS cream eyeshadow retails for about $21 and can be purchased at www.sephora.com

fallen leaves

Happy Thanksgiving - it's my first as a Canadian so yes, we'll be doing the pumpkin, sweet potato stuff etc (but i do draw the line at turkey).

BTW, about turkey - local readers might like to know that Thrifty Foods at Suter Brook will take christmas orders for turkey and have it available for pick up prior to christmas. This solves my traditional "racing around for the christmas bird" dilemma.

.... but back to thanksgiving. It might be a family occasion but I would quite like mine out of the house for a while so I can finish the housework. Also, since no close family are nearby, we haven't been riven with arguments over whose Thanksgiving dinner(s) we should attend. That doesn't seem to be quite such a brilliant part of the tradition, eh?

.... and we're importing family this year for christmas.
voila! problem solved

PS: i'll be out and about (or oot and aboot) looking for maple leaves to clad in fine silver again - tis the season for maple leaf painting)

Modesty- Comme les Français

I have already divulged the fact that there was only one bathroom chez Famille Chic. I quickly got used to sharing this bathroom with the three other members of the family: Madame Chic, Monsieur Chic and “A” (their son). I was asked my first day on arrival by Madame Chic whether I wanted to take my baths every morning or every evening. Hmmm. I chose morning and secretly wondered if I would also possibly be able to take the occasional hot bath before bedtime. I thought I might ask- but decided not to stretch it- especially on my first day there.

Time passed and I quickly got used to my routine salle de bains. I kept a little basket in my bedroom that contained my toiletries- as counter space in the tiny bathroom was sparse. Each morning at 7:00 am I would go to the bathroom and partake of my morning ritual. The bathroom, like the kitchen, was very bare bones. It was always sparkling clean and had very modest features- tile floors, a tiny mirror and a freestanding sink with hardly any counter space. There was no shower (which I found very odd, at first) but, instead, an ample-sized tub with a hand held showerhead fixture.

The tub was situated in front of a very large window. The window did not have any covering on it (no blinds or curtains) because it did not look out to anything but a wall. One morning, about three months into my stay, I was in the bathtub, well- bathing, when suddenly I looked up and there was a man in the window. This sounds very creepy- and believe me, it was! It was the window washer, doing his monthly rounds. He was washing the windows for the entire building, suspended on one of those window washing scaffolding things (at the time I was at a loss for the proper terminology and I still am). Mon Dieu! I shrieked and scrambled to find a cloth or towel or something to cover myself! The window washer looked in the window and merely smiled and waved at me and carried on with his business. He did not leer, he did not stare (I wasn’t sure whether I should have been relived or insulted).

After my traumatic bath I immediately went to Madame Chic and told her what had happened. I expected her to be outraged- shocked! Instead she looked at me with an amused smile and said (in French) “Oh yes, he’s seen all of us in the bath. He only comes once a month.” Madame Chic probably sensed my utter bewilderment towards her nonchalance. She asked if I would feel more comfortable if curtains were put up in the bathroom. I thought about it for a moment and decided against it. Yes it was weird, but perhaps my Puritanical American instincts were in overdrive and I just needed to chill. I said ça va, no need for curtains… after all… when in Rome…

The next morning I discovered someone (presumably Monsieur Chic) had installed a makeshift curtain over the bathroom window. I have a feeling that the moment I left Paris it was taken down.

beachcomber - ocean inspired

ebb avatar colour manip

my own copper beachcomber

a great wardrobe staple which fits equally well with open necklines and turtle neck tops

Behold! I have listed new beachcomber necklaces on Etsy thus breaking my summer silence.

There are two versions available, one in copper with lots of amber and the other in silvery tinned copper presenting an altogether cooler slant on Fall/winter fashions accessorising.

Beachcombers are inspired by the ocean, they are nets full of beautiful sunken treasure brought to the surface. They fit right in with this season's trend to bold statement bib necklaces and satisfy the OOAK craving for uniqueness. No two beachcombers will look alike and no placement of beads will mirror another.

National Poetry Day

Today is National Poetry Day. So in honor of this glorious occasion, I am sharing with you one of my poems...

Rue du General Delestraint

I lounge and dream of Paris
Of the rue upon which I lived
Rueful to the thought
That my heart didn't completely give
into the lights the sounds-
the mist of the city.
I loved it (I did)
But oh what a pity
I am not there now
But my memory remains
As constant and pure
As the predictable rain.

Lip Colors For Fall To Compliment The Season

Fall has officially arrived and it is time to take a look at our lip colors whether it be in lipstick or lip gloss, to see if they still work for our faces. Lip colors we may have enjoyed in spring and summer should be adjusted as the seasons change.

Typically we wear softer, more muted colors to compliment spring and summer fashion and our tanned skin, and they always give a more youthful appearance to women as we mature. However, with that noted, a deeper shade will not necessarily age us if the rest of our face is put together well. It is always about how we shade our complexions from a mineral makeup foundation with blush shade and lips with eye shadow. A perfect pallet of color is so beautiful in the Fall and one to be admired.

Reminiscent Of Autumn

A cold Fall day brings about change and excitement as we head into the Holidays, spending time with family and friends to share in traditions and enjoy childhood memories.

It's a time of hearths filled with the warmth of a crackling fire, hot apple cider, cinnamon sticks and pumpkin everything.

A time of decorating our homes and front porches with Fall nuances and Halloween treats.

Spending time with our family and reliving the gathering of pumpkins steeped in tradition for decoration and pumpkin pie.

The Fall air is fresh, crisp and renewed with subtle aromas of floral, woodsy, earthy tones to awaken our senses.

A drive on a country road reveals the exquisite rich, radiant colors as the sun dances on the many shades of crimson and golden yellow leaves around every bend.

Homes are lined with the Autumn blooming Mums and one can only take pause at their splendor. It is a truly breathtaking scene!

Yes....Autumn is a time of change as summer fair dwindles to only be replaced by more intense revitalized colors. It is only natural that our fashion and our lip colors should too.

Fall Fashion...My Favorite

We enjoy bundling ourselves up with warm fluffy sweaters and scarves and taking strolls in the crisp air enjoying the many shades of Fall, and seeing what our neighbors are doing for their Halloween fun.

Our fashion goes from summer and spring pastels to winter white, rich burgundy, deep golds and greens, dark plum, shades of brown, reds and russets, and last but not least burnt orange.

These colors can bring about cheerfulness since they signify warmth, coziness and can be quite uplifting to ones' mood. So our pastels are replaced with the deeper, richer textures of color as our skin fades from the summer sun. All the more reason to enhance our skin tones with some warmth through deepening our lip colors.

Lip Colors For Fall And To Enhance The Face

As we fade in the winter, our skin begins to lose color and in women of mature years not only does our face lose pigment but so do our lips and they tend to get thinner as well. It is the natural order of things. So we must put color back onto our lips through the use of lip colors so we don't look like death warmed over.

In the Fall and Winter we can get away with more intense shades that will give a beautiful subtle color without overpowering the look. We can remain youthful with darker shades by choosing the correct ones and even layering can give positive results to achieve perfection. Russets, Deep Reds and Wine shades are beautiful on women of mature years and goes farther in tying them together with our favorite Fall fashions.

Tip: You maintain that youthful appearance by keeping blush and eye shadow muted and subtle while increasing the level of lip color. It is more about blush and shadows aging you with too much intensity than a richer, deeper color on the lips. Deep lips, light eye shadow or deep eye shadow, light lips for optimum look.......and blush should always be muted and subtle. Also never line outside your natural lip line and using a nude shade for definition is ideal and most versatile for easy melding of your lip color into the lip line.

In bringing about the subtle changes of deeper tones, you definitely want to avoid shades that are too dark unless you have dark ethnic skin or bright in tone such as red lipstick. This was popular when I was young and during the World War II era, mainly due to lack of selection compared to today, but with so many different shades of red today, is is better to get a russet red or wine red since this is a blend of colors which compliments and won't age the face. Young women with fair skin can look exquisite in a true red shade.

But for women of mature years the big no...no....we definitely don't want to resemble the Joan Crawford or Bette Davis of the "Baby Jane" era. Striking yes.....right out of my socks....scary! It looks like she is casket ready just in time for Halloween....wowza!

Although our entire pallet of lip colors can be worn year round based on skin tone, the featured shades for Fall are Raspberry Sorbet, Copper Spice, Berries N' Creme and Plum Fairy. These shades have been extremely popular lately as they are outselling the other shades mainly due to the time of year.

You can layer them.... such as a lipstick first and then a layer of lip glaze over the top. This is a great way to also make those thinning lips look a bit fuller rather than with lipstick alone. A slight polished shimmer will give the illusion of a fuller mouth. Use different colors also to achieve a completely different shade.

I currently have changed to Copper Spice Lipstick with a Lip Glaze over the top of either Berries N' Cream or Coral Sand. It softens my Fall shade, yet gives me a more intense color that goes with my Fall wardrobe beautifully.

A Drawer Full Of Lip Colors...you say!

Don't worry about still having shades from this past spring / summer, since you can create new shades by simply purchasing one of our deeper shades in either the lipstick or lip glaze and putting them over the top of the old shade. This is a great way to use them up and the lip glaze can be used to revitalize the texture of an old lipstick since the oils and waxes will tend to dry out over time. If you have a lip color for over a year or two, more than likely it is past its' prime and should be discarded anyway.

Lip Glazes Are Perfect For Your Tween!

These are a great way to introduce your tween to lip color without making her look overdone. The colors are always more sheer and subdued in a glaze, giving more shine with hint of color so her lips can have that shimmery pop while looking like her true self.

Tip For Contaminated Lipsticks

If you ever get a cold sore or fever blister and you have used your lipsticks during the process of healing, you don't need to throw it away to prevent reinfection. Simply dip the lipstick in rubbing alcohol and allow it to air dry. A great way to preserve your favorite lipstick.

Cannot be used on lip glaze or lip gloss due to the tube structure and the wand contaminating entire batch with each dip into the color.

Remember The Smooth Pucker

One thing to note of importance...our lipsticks and lip glazes will soothe, heal, prevent and moisturize cracked lips staving off winter dryness from the frigid air. They are 100% vegan and are rich in organic butters and oils yet will not leave the lips goopy, sticky or slimy. Just pure luscious lips without dryness unlike commercial brands. No artificial dyes, lakes or Carmine are ever used. We are also replacing our original formula with Gluten Free as they sell out.

Enjoy your weekend and I hope you enjoyed all the photos. I love Fall and the colors and fragrances that come with it. I could have gone on with more colors, but alas only so many hours in a day.
